Christina Applegate is pulling back the curtain on a reality most fans never see — and it’s far more heartbreaking than many realized.

The Emmy-winning actress, now 54, says multiple sclerosis has reshaped nearly every part of her daily life. Diagnosed in 2021 with the incurable autoimmune disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord, Applegate has been candid about her struggle. But her latest revelation hits especially hard.

She now spends most of her days in bed.

In a new interview with People ahead of her upcoming memoir You With The Sad Eyes, the Married… with Children and Dead to Me star revealed that chronic, relentless pain makes it difficult to move around — sometimes even impossible.

Despite that reality, there is one thing that gets her up every single day: her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie.

“I want to take her; it’s my favorite thing to do. It’s the only time we have together by ourselves,” Applegate shared. But the effort comes at a cost. She admitted she has to mentally coach herself through it: just get her there safely, then get home and back into bed.

And that’s exactly what she does.

The image is a stark contrast to the high-energy actress Americans grew up watching. For nearly five decades, Applegate worked nonstop in Hollywood. Now, even simple tasks can feel overwhelming.

On her MesSy podcast — which she co-hosts with The Sopranos actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also lives with MS — Applegate has spoken openly about the excruciating pain she experiences.

“I lay in bed screaming,” she said in a 2024 episode, describing sharp, squeezing pain that can take over her body.

Sometimes the pain travels into her hands, making it difficult to hold a phone or a TV remote. Opening bottles can be a challenge. On particularly brutal days, even placing her feet on the floor is unbearable.

MS symptoms vary from person to person, but they can include extreme fatigue, numbness, dizziness, muscle spasms, balance issues, and cognitive problems. For Applegate, the nerve pain appears to be one of the most devastating aspects.

In a moment of dark humor, she previously joked about retreating back to bed rather than walking to the bathroom when the pain becomes too intense — later clarifying she was kidding, but emphasizing just how difficult and awkward everyday movement can feel.

The heartbreaking truth is that this is now her normal.

And yet, through it all, Applegate keeps showing up for her daughter. The school drop-offs. The drives to activities. The quiet time together in the car. Those moments, she says, are worth pushing through the pain.

  1. Like Michael J. Fox with Parkinson’s, she pushes thru because she is a fighter.
