The Deadliest Catch family is mourning a heartbreaking loss.
Todd Meadows, a crew member aboard the Aleutian Lady, died Wednesday in what has been described as a fishing-related incident during filming, according to TMZ.
Captain Rick Shelford confirmed the devastating news in an emotional Facebook post shared Monday.
“February 25, 2026 was the most tragic day in the history of the Aleutian Lady on the Bering Sea. We lost our brother, Todd Meadows,” he wrote.
Shelford described Todd as the newest member of the crew who quickly became part of the family. He praised Todd’s love for fishing and strong work ethic, saying he earned everyone’s respect almost immediately.
“His smile was contagious,” the captain added. “The sound of his laughter coming up the wheelhouse stairs or over the deck hailer is something we will carry with us always.”
“Our hearts are broken in a way that words can’t fully express,” Shelford continued.
The post included photos of Todd on deck, wearing fishing gear and working alongside his crewmates in the harsh Bering Sea conditions.
According to reports, producers of Deadliest Catch have been informed of the incident and are offering support and resources to those affected by the loss. A Discovery Channel spokesperson also issued a statement expressing deep sadness.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows,” the statement read. “This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones, his crewmates, and the entire fishing community during this incredibly difficult time.”
Deadliest Catch first premiered in 2005 and has built a reputation for showing the grueling and often dangerous realities of crab fishing on the Bering Sea. The series was reportedly filming Season 22 when the tragedy occurred.
Over the years, the show has endured multiple heartbreaking losses.
Captain Phil Harris died in 2010 at age 53 after suffering a stroke while unloading his boat in Alaska. In 2024, longtime cast member Nick Mavar died suddenly at 59 after stepping away from the series due to health concerns. And in 2020, crew member Nick McGlashan died at 33 from a drug overdose after battling addiction.
The risks of the job have always been front and center. Captain Sig Hansen previously spoke about the life-threatening conditions crews face, recalling moments when ice buildup nearly caused catastrophe and when fellow fishermen were lost at sea.
“You watch people and friends that you know, and you’re literally in the fog,” Hansen once said. “They’re right over there, and there’s nothing I can do about it, and they’re gone.”
