James Tolkan, the veteran character actor best known for playing the unforgettable Mr. Strickland in Back to the Future and Tom Cruise’s tough commanding officer in Top Gun, has died at 94.

According to a family spokesperson, Tolkan died on Thursday, March 26, in Saranac Lake, New York.

For generations of movie fans, Tolkan will always be remembered as the no-nonsense Hill Valley High School principal who famously had no patience for “slackers” in Back to the Future. His stern face, sharp delivery, and commanding screen presence made Mr. Strickland one of the most memorable supporting characters in the beloved franchise.

Tolkan returned for 1989’s Back to the Future Part II, and in Back to the Future Part III, he took on a second role by playing Strickland’s ancestor, keeping his mark on the franchise alive in a whole new way.

He also made a lasting impression in Top Gun, where he played Tom “Stinger” Jardian, the aircraft carrier commander who fiercely called out Tom Cruise’s Maverick for his reckless flying. It was another role that perfectly captured the tough, intimidating energy Tolkan brought so well to the screen.

But his career stretched far beyond those two fan-favorite classics.

After serving in the Navy during the Korean War, Tolkan studied drama at the University of Iowa and earned his degree in 1956. He landed his first television role just a few years later in Naked City, kicking off a long Hollywood career that would span decades.

Over the years, he appeared in a long list of television shows, including Remington Steele, Miami Vice, and The Wonder Years. On the big screen, he also took roles in films like Woody Allen’s Love and Death and Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy, proving he could slip into all kinds of memorable character parts.

Following news of his death, tributes began pouring in from fans and colleagues who remembered the impact he made on screen.

Michael J. Fox, who played Marty McFly in Back to the Future, honored Tolkan in an emotional Instagram post.

“RIP to the great James Tolkan. You were definitely no slacker. Grateful to know you, act with you, and direct you in Tales from the Crypt. I’ll miss you pal.”

Even with a career filled with standout performances, Tolkan’s legacy will likely remain tied to the gruff, unforgettable authority figures he made iconic. Whether he was scolding Marty McFly in the school hallway or tearing into Maverick aboard an aircraft carrier, James Tolkan had a way of stealing every scene he was in.
