Erika Martinez-Ramirez (McLennan County District Attorney)

A Texas mother is headed to prison after a shocking case involving her teenage son, a deadly crash, and a string of warnings that went ignored.

Erika Martinez-Ramirez was found guilty of endangering a child and sentenced to the maximum two years behind bars following a tragic incident that left a 67-year-old cyclist dead.

The case centers on a disturbing night in Bellmead, Texas, back on July 14, 2024.

According to prosecutors, it was around 1:30 a.m. when Martinez-Ramirez sent her 14-year-old son out on an errand to pick up clothes. But what happened next turned deadly.

Authorities say the teen — who has not been publicly identified — was driving under the influence when he struck and killed cyclist Dennis Welch before crashing into a home. Even more alarming, his 10-year-old sister was also in the car and suffered minor injuries in the wreck.

Investigators later revealed this wasn’t the first time the boy had been behind the wheel.

In fact, police had stopped him twice before while driving his mother’s car. The first incident happened in December 2023, when he was caught speeding with several other kids inside the vehicle. His mother was cited at the time.

Just weeks later, the teen was involved in another incident after hitting a car and fleeing the scene. Police again warned Martinez-Ramirez that allowing her son to drive was unacceptable.

But those warnings didn’t stop what came next.

Prosecutors said they chose to charge Martinez-Ramirez with child endangerment instead of manslaughter, noting it was easier to prove in court and carried the same potential sentence. Officials also said there was no clear evidence she knew her son was intoxicated the night of the fatal crash.

Still, they argued her repeated decisions put lives at risk — and ultimately led to a deadly outcome.

“Parents are rarely prosecuted for crimes committed by their children, but this mother’s actions were so irresponsible and so frequent that both prosecution and a maximum sentence were warranted,” prosecutors said.
