Shirley Raines, a widely admired influencer and humanitarian known for her tireless volunteer work on Skid Row, has died at the age of 58.

Raines, the CEO and co-founder of the nonprofit Beauty 2 The Streetz, was found dead at her home in Henderson, Nevada, according to her family. Authorities have not released a cause of death, and no foul play is suspected.

News of her passing was confirmed in an emotional statement shared by Beauty 2 The Streetz, the organization she founded in 2019 to provide haircuts, makeup, hygiene services, food, and dignity to unhoused people in Los Angeles.

“It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that Beauty 2 The Streetz announces the passing of our beloved CEO and founder, Shirley Raines, affectionately known to so many as Ms. Shirley,” the statement read. “She dedicated her life to serving others and made an immeasurable impact on homeless communities throughout Los Angeles and Nevada.”

Raines’ work stood out not only for its consistency but for its compassion. Through her massive social media platform, she amplified the voices of people often ignored, documenting their stories while offering tangible help and human connection. She ultimately built a following of more than one million people on Instagram.

Her mission was deeply personal. Raines openly spoke about her own struggles with grief and financial instability after the death of her two-year-old son, Demetrius, in 1990. She credited self-care and beauty as part of the healing process that later became the foundation of her outreach work.

In 2021, Raines was honored as CNN Hero of the Year for her impact. While accepting the award, she spoke candidly about her pain and purpose.

“I stand before you a very broken woman,” she said. “I am a mother without a son, and there are a lot of people in the streets without a mother — and I feel like it’s a fair exchange.”

Just days before her death, Raines was still actively serving her community, sharing a video of herself handing out hot dogs to people in need.

Tributes poured in from fans, volunteers, and celebrities alike, many of whom credited Raines with changing their lives.

Lizzo shared an emotional tribute on social media, calling Raines an “incredible woman” and a “true leader.” The singer recalled working closely with her on charitable efforts, including donating clothing for unhoused communities.

“She helped people feel seen. She helped people feel beautiful,” Lizzo said through tears. “When the public was turning its back on me, she never did.”

Eva Mendes also honored Raines, describing her as a “real queen” and a visionary whose legacy would live on through the countless lives she touched. SZA, along with thousands of followers, expressed disbelief and heartbreak over the loss.
