The figure skating world is reeling after a beloved coach and former Team USA medalist was shot and killed in a shocking act of violence — all while sitting in line at a Starbucks drive-thru.

Gabrielle “Sam” Linehan, 28, had been on her way to a friend’s house to watch the Olympics on February 10 when she stopped for coffee in St. Louis. Instead, authorities say, the quick errand turned deadly.

Police responded just after 10 a.m. to reports of a shooting at the Starbucks. When officers arrived, they found Linehan still inside her vehicle with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive.

According to reports, surveillance footage allegedly shows 58-year-old Keith Brown approaching Linehan’s car, ordering her to put her hands up, and then shooting her at close range.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed Brown was arrested the following day and now faces one count of first-degree murder, three counts of first-degree robbery, four counts of armed criminal action, and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Authorities say Brown has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1986, including prior convictions for burglary, robbery, and armed criminal action. Court records show he was released on parole in July 2020. Investigators now allege he was also involved in two other robberies in the days leading up to Linehan’s death.

Linehan was no stranger to the spotlight. She represented Team USA and earned a silver medal at the 2014 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships. After stepping away from competition, she dedicated her life to coaching with the Metro Edge Figure Skating Club, mentoring young skaters and helping shape the next generation of athletes.

Outside the rink, she also served as general manager of Sado, a popular St. Louis restaurant.
