A Providence College basketball player is facing serious allegations after police say he showed up outside a home in the middle of the night and threatened a terrifying act of violence.

According to a police report cited by local news, 23-year-old Duncan Powell allegedly threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend, her friends, and then himself.

Cranston Police responded to a home on Plainfield Pike just after 1 a.m. Sunday after a woman reported that her friend’s ex-boyfriend was outside with a gun. But by the time officers got there, no one was outside and Powell had already left the area.

The woman told police that Powell’s ex-girlfriend had been at the house earlier that night and was getting bombarded with calls from him because he wanted to know where she was. Fearing things could turn dangerous, the ex-girlfriend decided to leave the home because she was worried Powell might hurt both her and the people around her.

After she left, Powell allegedly showed up at the house anyway.

One witness told police they saw something sticking out of his sweatshirt pocket, raising fears that he may have been armed. According to the report, Powell stayed at the door for about four minutes before leaving.

Police then asked the ex-girlfriend to come back and speak with them. She allegedly told officers that Powell had struck her earlier Saturday while they were at his apartment. She also showed police a bruise on her leg.

The woman also claimed she had recently discovered a tracking device attached to the underside of her car while getting an oil change, and said Powell had been constantly trying to find out where she was.

While officers were talking to her, Powell reportedly kept calling her phone. At one point, an officer answered and urged him to come back to the scene.

Police said they believed Powell was walking while on the phone. An officer then reportedly spotted him approaching with his hand inside his sweatshirt, which caused police to draw their weapons and arrest him at gunpoint out of concern for their safety.

A search later showed Powell was not armed. Officers also found his black Cadillac parked just around the block from the apartment.

Powell, a 6-foot-8 forward from Dallas, was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning.

On the court, Powell appeared in 22 games and made five starts for the Providence Friars last season, averaging 4.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Before Providence, he also played for North Carolina A&T, Sacramento State, and Georgia Tech.
