Carson Daly and Vicky Nguyen appeared to laugh off an awkward “mansplaining” joke during a live Today segment, but insiders claim Daly was genuinely upset once the cameras stopped rolling.
The tense exchange happened during the July 17 episode of the NBC morning show while Daly, Nguyen and Al Roker were discussing outdoor grills.
At one point, Daly, 53, offered advice to viewers thinking about buying a barbecue.
“The other thing I’ll say if you’re interested in buying a barbecue is, it’s not one of those things where you get what you pay for,” the former TRL host said. “The most expensive grill on the market is not necessarily the best.”
Nguyen, 47, then pointed out that the same advice had already been mentioned earlier in the segment.
“Yeah. Thank you for mansplaining that again, Carson,” she joked before giving Daly a hug.
Roker immediately reacted to the unexpected jab.
“Whoa!” he exclaimed. “You come for the grill advice, you stay for the ba-boom!”
Daly pretended to be offended and insisted he was simply enthusiastic about the topic.
“I just am passionate about the grill!” he said.
Although Daly kept smiling and played along on camera, a source later claimed he was furious during the commercial break.
“Carson exploded off-air as soon as they went to commercial,” the insider told Rob Shuter’s Substack. “He’s still livid, and Carson can hold a grudge.”
The reported reaction fueled speculation that the brief on-air joke may have exposed deeper tension between the two colleagues.
“When something like this happens on camera, people naturally wonder what the atmosphere is like when the cameras are off,” another source said. “These moments don’t happen in a vacuum.”
A third insider claimed Nguyen’s comment resonated with some staff members because they immediately recognized the behavior she was calling out.
“Carson would never speak to a man that way — or to Savannah Guthrie,” the source alleged. “It’s always the younger female staffers who get interrupted.”
Neither Daly nor NBC has publicly confirmed the report that he became angry backstage.
Nguyen also faced backlash from viewers who believed her “mansplaining” remark was disrespectful.
She later shared an angry email from one critic who demanded that she apologize to Daly and accused her own consumer reports of being patronizing.
“You owe Mr. Daly an apology for your ‘mansplaining’ comment,” the viewer wrote.
The message went on to accuse Nguyen of treating viewers “as if we’re idiots” and suggested one of her cohosts should thank her for “elite-splaining” information to the audience.
The sender also described Nguyen’s hug with Daly as “phony” and told her to “get off your high horse.”
Nguyen appeared to laugh off the criticism rather than engage with it.
“It’s hard out here for a consumer reporter,” she captioned the screenshot.
What looked like a few seconds of harmless teasing on live television has now turned into a larger controversy, with insiders insisting Daly was far more upset than viewers initially realized.
