A promising 19-year-old British cyclist has died after being struck by a car during a major race in Portugal, bringing the competition to a heartbreaking halt.
Finlay Tarling was involved in what organizers described as a “serious accident” Friday, Aug. 14, while competing in the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal, which was running from Melgaco to Fafe.
Tarling’s team, NSN Cycling Team, confirmed his death in an emotional statement.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today,” the team said.
They described Tarling as a beloved teammate, but said he was “most importantly” a son, brother and friend who would be deeply missed.
The team also sent its condolences to Tarling’s parents, Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who knew the young cyclist.
According to The Guardian, a Portuguese broadcaster reported that Tarling was struck by a vehicle that was not part of the race and had been traveling in the opposite direction.
Race organizers later confirmed Tarling had died following the crash.
The competition was immediately stopped after the tragedy, and organizers canceled the scheduled podium ceremony as a sign of respect and mourning.
Tarling had been racing for the NSN Development Team at the time of the accident.
Portugal’s president, António José Seguro, also reacted to the young athlete’s death, saying the tragedy had plunged the peloton, the tournament and the country hosting the event into mourning.
Tarling’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through the cycling community as teammates, race officials and fans mourn a young rider whose career had only just begun.
