British television star Alison Hammond gave viewers a frightening scare after suddenly becoming ill and walking off the set of a live broadcast while clutching her chest.

The 51-year-old presenter was co-hosting ITV’s This Morning with Dermot O’Leary on Friday when she abruptly left the studio about 90 minutes into the program.

Hammond had just been taking part in a segment involving pets when viewers noticed something appeared to be wrong.

When the show returned from a commercial break, O’Leary explained that his co-host had been forced to step away.

“Alison is feeling a little unwell, so she’s just had to duck out,” he told viewers.

At first, O’Leary said he hoped Hammond would return before the end of the broadcast.

But she never came back.

He later told viewers that Hammond was still feeling unwell and that he would host the remainder of the show alone.

The sudden departure immediately sparked concern among fans, particularly after Hammond had appeared distressed and was seen touching her chest.

Several hours later, she finally reassured viewers from a hospital bed.

In a video shared on social media, Hammond said doctors were checking her heart after she experienced palpitations during the live show.

“I know you’re all worried about me. Honestly, I am fine,” she said.

Hammond explained that she had felt “a little bit of a palpitation” and was undergoing tests as a precaution.

At the time, she said she hoped the episode had simply been a panic attack.

Despite being in the hospital, Hammond appeared upbeat and even joked about the dramatic interruption to her workday.

Still wearing her television makeup, she laughed about how good she looked and captioned one update, “Anything to have a day off.”

She also apologized to viewers for suddenly leaving the show.

“I would never normally do that,” Hammond said, explaining that walking away from a live television program showed just how unwell she had suddenly felt.

The presenter thanked fans for the flood of supportive messages she received after disappearing from the broadcast.

By the following day, Hammond had another reassuring update.

She said she was back home and safe after doctors checked her heart and determined that the frightening episode had been a panic attack.

The scare temporarily interrupted an exceptionally busy period in Hammond’s career.

She first became a household name in Britain after appearing on Big Brother in 2002.

She later became a familiar face on This Morning, initially appearing as a reporter before eventually becoming one of the show’s regular hosts.

American viewers may know Hammond best as a co-host of The Great British Bake Off, known in the United States as The Great British Baking Show.

She joined the popular competition series in 2023, replacing Matt Lucas and working alongside Noel Fielding and longtime judge Paul Hollywood.

Hammond has also appeared on a long list of British television programs, including I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Strictly Come Dancing, Celebrity MasterChef and The Masked Singer.

She later took over hosting duties on For the Love of Dogs following the death of longtime presenter Paul O’Grady.

In 2025, she starred alongside her son Aidan in the travel series Alison Hammond’s Florida Unpacked and also hosted Alison Hammond’s Big Weekend.

Her workload continued to grow this year with hosting duties on Netflix’s official Bridgerton podcast and the music competition Your Song alongside singer Paloma Faith.

For fans watching Friday’s live broadcast, however, Hammond’s busy career suddenly became secondary as concern grew over her health.
