Grammy-winning singer Duffy has been seen in public for the first time in 16 years after disappearing from the spotlight following a horrifying ordeal she later revealed to fans.

The Welsh singer, best known for her smash hit “Mercy,” was spotted this week at Caffi Largo in Pwllheli, Wales. The restaurant shared a photo of the singer on social media Wednesday, surprising fans who have followed her long absence from public life.

“Celebrity singer from Nefyn, Amy Duffy, popped into the Caffi this morning,” the restaurant wrote. “Always lovely to see local talent supporting local spots.”

Duffy, whose full name is Aimée Anne Duffy, became a global star in 2008 with “Mercy” and her debut album Rockferry. The album earned her the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, along with three Brit Awards.

But after her rapid rise to fame, Duffy suddenly vanished from the public eye. For years, fans wondered what had happened to the singer who had once seemed unstoppable.

In 2020, Duffy finally revealed the painful reason behind her retreat from fame in an essay titled “The 5th House.”

She said she had been drugged while out celebrating her 26th birthday in 2010, then taken abroad, raped, and later held captive in her own home for weeks.

Duffy did not name the person involved. No one has been arrested or charged in connection with her claims.

“The truth is, and please trust me I am OK and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days,” she wrote at the time. “Many of you wonder what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why.”

She said the trauma left her unable to return to music or public life.

“You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain? I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes,” she wrote. “I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken?”

Duffy also revealed that she had struggled with suicidal thoughts after the attack and had not wanted to speak publicly about what happened.

Now, after more than a decade away, Duffy appears to be preparing for a quiet return.

The singer recently revealed on Instagram that she is planning a “secret intimate gig” in London on July 5 and hopes some of her fans will be able to attend.

“I’m doing a secret intimate gig in London on the 5th July, next month, and I would love nothing more than for some of you to attend,” she said. “It’s only small capacity so we can only select a few, but really looking forward to it, I will sing some new songs.”

She has also teased new music, sharing a photo of herself in the studio with an emotional message to fans.

“If only I could find the right words to explain how much I’ve missed you all,” she wrote. “Working on coming back to you. Duffy x.”
