World Cup commentator Warren Barton was left bleeding from the head after being struck by an apparent bottle during Colombia’s 3-1 win over Uzbekistan.

Barton was calling the match at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium alongside Jacqui Oatley for Fox when the already chaotic atmosphere took a dangerous turn.

The wild scenes began in the first half after Daniel Munoz scored Colombia’s opening goal. Fans erupted in celebration, and both commentators were drenched with beer during the broadcast.

But things became more serious late in the second half when Barton appeared to be hit by something thrown from the crowd. Despite the blow, the former Newcastle and Wimbledon player stayed on the air and continued calling the match through a frantic finish.

Oatley later shared an update on X, saying Barton was “OK” after the shocking incident.

“That was an unusual one,” she wrote. “Getting drenched in beer while commentating on a goal (quite refreshing, actually) and poor Warren Barton was whacked/cut in the head by a flying bottle!”

She added that she heard the impact, turned around and saw blood trickling down Barton’s forehead.

The moment was also addressed live on air in stoppage time.

“Warren is busy being assaulted by a fan behind us,” Oatley said during the broadcast, explaining that someone had thrown a cup from behind them. “I hope it was empty, are you alright?”

Barton tried to brush it off, replying, “I think yeah. I’ve been seeing a few double players.”

Oatley then realized the injury was worse than it first appeared.

“Warren’s got an actual cut to the head, you’re dripping with blood,” she said. “I’m not joking. What on earth was it, a full bottle of something?”

Barton remained calm despite the cut.

“No, I know. It’s OK. It’s good,” he said. “Whatever it was, it was sharp, but I’m OK.”

The strange night did not end there. A cameraman also appeared to suffer an injury earlier in the match after colliding with Luis Diaz near the touchline. Diaz had been fouled by Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov and tumbled into the cameraman while trying to stay in play.

Oatley later noted that the cameraman had “disappeared” after the collision.

On the field, Colombia gave its fans plenty to celebrate. Diaz helped set up Munoz’s opener before scoring Colombia’s second goal himself. Uzbekistan answered through Abbosbek Fayzullaev, who scored the country’s historic first World Cup goal.

But Jaminton Campaz sealed the dramatic win for Colombia with a stoppage-time strike that sent the Azteca Stadium into a frenzy.

The victory lifted Colombia to the top of Group K, ahead of Portugal, which had been held by DR Congo earlier in the day.

By the end of the broadcast, Oatley summed up the mood in Mexico City perfectly.

“Nobody in Mexico City is going to get much sleep tonight,” she said.
