A summer camping trip ended in unimaginable tragedy when an 11-year-old Boy Scout was struck and killed by a falling tree while walking along a wooded trail in Michigan.
The boy was hiking through the Owasippe Scout Reservation in Blue Lake Township on Thursday, July 23, when the tree suddenly came down and hit him, according to the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the young camper, who was visiting from River Forest, Illinois, suffered multiple traumatic injuries and died as a result.
The sheriff’s office received the emergency call at approximately 5:08 p.m., prompting a rapid response from deputies, the Blue Lake Fire Department, White Lake Ambulance and Muskegon County Victim Services.
Officials have not publicly identified the boy or revealed whether anyone else was walking beside him when the tree fell.
It also remains unclear what caused the tree to come down. Authorities have not said whether weather conditions, decay or another factor may have played a role.
Scouting America released a statement mourning the devastating loss.
“We are heartbroken by the death of our Scout at Owasippe Scout Reservation,” the organization said. “Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the Scout’s family, friends, fellow Scouts and leaders during this incredibly difficult time.”
Scouting America said it is fully cooperating with investigators as authorities work to determine exactly what happened.
The sprawling Owasippe Scout Reservation covers approximately 4,800 acres and has operated in western Michigan since 1911. The property includes several camps, wilderness areas and roughly 75 miles of trails winding through Muskegon County and portions of the Manistee National Forest.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active and that additional information will be released when it becomes available.
