Chuck Russell, the iconic Hollywood filmmaker behind blockbuster hits including The Mask and The Scorpion King, has died at the age of 74.
Russell died Wednesday after a local fire department in the San Diego area responded to his home following a report of an unconscious man. His cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
Born in Park Ridge, Illinois, Russell moved to Los Angeles after graduating from the University of Illinois and began working his way through the film industry. He started as a production assistant on low-budget movies before earning one of his first major writing credits on the 1984 science-fiction thriller Dreamscape.
Russell made his directorial debut with 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, a fan-favorite entry in the horror franchise that also helped introduce audiences to Patricia Arquette.
He later became known for directing movies that played major roles in launching some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Russell directed the 1994 comedy The Mask, which transformed Jim Carrey into a major box-office attraction and marked Cameron Diaz’s feature-film debut. The wildly successful movie became one of the defining comedies of the decade.
In 2002, Russell directed the action-fantasy adventure The Scorpion King, giving Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson his first leading role in a major Hollywood film and helping launch his career as a global movie star.
His other credits included the 1985 comedy Girls Just Want to Have Fun, starring a young Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt, as well as the acclaimed 2005 drama Junebug, which earned Amy Adams the first Academy Award nomination of her career.
Russell’s final completed project was the 2024 supernatural horror remake Witchboard, which he wrote and directed.
Over a career spanning several decades, Russell developed a reputation for creating crowd-pleasing films while helping introduce audiences to performers who would go on to become some of the entertainment industry’s most recognizable names.
He is survived by his wife, Ania Zeyne Russell, and his three children, Logan, Riley and Carlyn.
