A disturbing scene unfolded just outside Dodger Stadium on Wednesday night when a man was found dead hanging from a bridge while thousands of fans were inside watching the Los Angeles Dodgers play.
The unidentified man was discovered at around 8:48 p.m. near Bernard Street and Stadium Way, several hundred yards from the stadium, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
At the time, the Dodgers were in the middle of a home game against the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch had taken place less than two hours earlier, and the game did not end until around 10:10 p.m.
According to police radio traffic, officers were called after bystanders dialed 911 and reported seeing a body “in plain sight.”
Police responded to the area and launched an investigation.
Authorities later said there were no immediate signs of foul play.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said the man had not yet been publicly identified and that the case was still pending identification and notification of his next of kin.
Officials have not released more details about how the man died or how long he may have been there before he was discovered.
Meanwhile, the game inside Dodger Stadium continued.
Los Angeles jumped out to an early lead after Freddie Freeman hit a three-run home run in the first inning.
Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto then dominated the Cardinals through the first five innings and flirted with a no-hitter.
But St. Louis mounted a comeback, scoring in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings before adding more runs in the 10th to pull off an 8-6 win.
Cardinals manager Oli Marmol praised his team for staying calm after falling behind early.
“You give up the three early, it’s easy to go, ‘OK, here we go,’” Marmol said after the game. “And the group just continues to not give in at any moment.”
The night also brought concern for Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani.
Ohtani went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts and appeared to be in discomfort.
After his final strikeout, he was seen shaking his right arm and wincing as he walked back toward the dugout.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts later said Ohtani had been dealing with soreness in his left knee and discomfort in his right arm.
“I think that tonight was kind of the tip of the iceberg,” Roberts said.
He added that Ohtani had not looked like himself over the previous couple of weeks.
While fans focused on the action inside the stadium, police were dealing with the grim discovery just a short distance away.
The man’s identity and official cause and manner of death have not yet been released.
