A newly married bodybuilder who was beginning to make a name for himself in competitive fitness has died after suddenly collapsing on stage during a major championship in England, just one day before his 34th birthday and only two months after his wedding.
Mateusz Chmura, 33, was competing in the Physical Culture Association’s British Finals on Sunday, October 18, when he suffered a medical emergency in front of fellow competitors and spectators. Despite efforts by emergency personnel to save him, the athlete later died at a hospital, leaving his wife and loved ones devastated.
The tragedy unfolded at the Telford International Centre in England, where Chmura, who lived in Wakefield, was participating in the Classic Bodybuilding Medium category. It was only his second bodybuilding competition, and his promising start in the sport had given him plenty of reasons to be excited about the future.
Just two weeks earlier, Chmura had finished in second place during his competitive debut, an impressive achievement for someone still finding his footing on the bodybuilding circuit. He had arrived at the British Finals hoping to build on that success, but his appearance took a tragic turn when he unexpectedly collapsed during his time on stage.
Medical personnel immediately rushed to assist him as organizers stopped the competition. Paramedics, a local ambulance crew and members of the Midlands Air Ambulance team worked alongside trained medical professionals from the audience who stepped forward to help.
Chmura was transported to a hospital, where doctors continued efforts to save his life. Tragically, he could not be revived.
The Physical Culture Association confirmed his death in an emotional statement, expressing its condolences to his family and acknowledging the distress experienced by everyone who witnessed the emergency.
“Our deepest condolences go to his wife, family, friends and everyone who knew and loved him,” the organization said.
Officials also thanked the medical teams, volunteers and spectators who responded, recognizing the efforts made to help Chmura during his final moments at the competition.
The championship was temporarily suspended while emergency crews treated him. After he had been transported to the hospital, organizers met with the athletes to discuss whether the event should continue. The decision was made to resume competition before anyone at the venue had learned that Chmura had died.
The association later explained that the incident had been deeply upsetting for those present and encouraged anyone struggling with what they witnessed to seek support.
Although the collapse occurred during a physically demanding bodybuilding event, authorities have not publicly disclosed what caused Chmura’s medical emergency or subsequent death. There is no confirmed evidence that his training, diet, supplements or competition preparation contributed to the tragedy.
The timing of his death has made the loss especially heartbreaking for his family. Chmura would have celebrated his 34th birthday on Monday, October 19, and had married his wife, Patrycja, just two months earlier.
Instead of preparing for another birthday and enjoying their first months of married life, Patrycja has been left mourning a husband whose unexpected death has shaken the bodybuilding community.
In the days following the tragedy, she publicly addressed another distressing development after discovering that an online fundraiser had apparently been established in connection with her husband’s death without her permission.
Patrycja warned supporters that she had not authorized anyone to collect donations for her or her family and urged people not to send money to campaigns claiming otherwise.
“I have not authorised anyone to collect money on behalf of me or my family,” she wrote on Instagram.
Her message reflected the emotional toll of losing her husband while also having to protect well-meaning supporters from potentially misleading fundraising appeals.
She explained that she was experiencing an extraordinarily painful period and did not yet have the strength to speak extensively about what had happened.
Despite her grief, she thanked those who had reached out with condolences and encouragement, making clear that their kindness meant a great deal during an overwhelming time.
Chmura’s sudden death comes amid another loss that has saddened the international bodybuilding community.
On October 14, Chilean professional bodybuilder Marianne von Gierke died at age 40, just two weeks after competing in the prestigious Mr. Olympia competition. Von Gierke, a mother and experienced competitor, had finished 13th in the women’s physique division and was remembered for her dedication to the sport.
Her cause of death has also not been publicly disclosed, and there is no evidence connecting the two deaths.
While bodybuilding competitions celebrate physical strength, discipline and years of preparation, Chmura’s death serves as a reminder that even athletes who appear exceptionally fit can experience unexpected medical emergencies. A person’s appearance or level of conditioning alone cannot establish their underlying health.
For those who watched Chmura compete, the loss is particularly difficult because he had only recently begun his competitive journey and had already shown considerable promise.
His second-place finish earlier in October suggested an exciting future in the sport, while his recent marriage marked the beginning of another important chapter in his personal life.
Instead, his family is facing a loss that came without warning, as friends, fellow athletes and supporters remember a young competitor whose life ended far too soon.
The circumstances surrounding Chmura’s collapse remain unclear, and no official cause of death has been announced.
