A grieving son has collapsed and died after he was stung by a wasp as he laid flowers on his mom’s grave.
Chef Marc Pavel told his friend about what had happened as he began to feel unwell following the sting. He started to have difficulty breathing as he drove his car home from the cemetery when, just yards from his house, he stopped his vehicle. Marc got out in a bid to try and find help but tragically before he could find anyone, he collapsed.
Locals called for an ambulance after finding Marc slumped on the ground near his car. Paramedics arrived on the scene, resuscitated him, and took him to a local hospital in the Italian city of Trieste, east of Venice. Hospital staff found that Marc had suffered a cardiac arrest, which had been caused by anaphylaxis from the wasp sting. His condition worsened once he got to hospital and despite the best efforts of medics he slipped into a coma.
He passed away in the intensive care unit of the hospital on Tuesday evening (July 30) after falling into a coma. He was stung at the cemetery on the Friday evening (July 26). The 47-year-old was a talented chef and sommelier. Reportedly well-known and well-liked in his native Trieste, he had won a local “cook of the year” award in 2012 for his “pumpkin cappuccino in an edible cup featuring toasted almonds and pieces of foie gras”.
Marc was closely involved with the Trieste Chefs Association and the Association of Chefs from Mediterranean and European Regions. His mother, whose grave he had been visiting, passed away in 2019.
He was called home by the Lord to be with his mother.
