A North Carolina high school football player has died after suffering an injury during a game.
Davion Fewell, a student at Page High School in Greensboro, was injured during a Sept. 10 game against Grimsley High School, according to Guilford County Schools.
The exact nature of Fewell’s injury has not been publicly disclosed.
A school spokesperson said he was taken to a hospital for treatment after the game and died several days later.
Fewell’s family said he died Sunday, Sept. 13.
“Guilford County Schools is saddened by the loss to our school community,” the district said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with their family, teammates, coaches and classmates.”
Page Pirates Football announced that the school will hold a candlelight vigil in Fewell’s honor on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
“Please keep his family, teammates, friends, and staff close to your hearts,” the team wrote on Facebook.
“We appreciate your thoughts and prayers. He was truly a great kid and we miss him dearly. We hope to see a packed stadium celebrating a beautiful life.”
Grief counseling will be available for students struggling with Fewell’s sudden death.
The D.J. Reader Foundation will also help Fewell’s family cover memorial and funeral expenses, according to the school district.
The nonprofit was founded by Grimsley High School alum D.J. Reader, who went on to play in the NFL and is currently with the New York Giants.
Authorities are now investigating what led to Fewell’s injury.
Greensboro Police also released a statement offering condolences to Fewell’s family, friends and school community.
“As a department, we want to share our support and condolences with the families, friends, and school families – including SROs, teachers, coaches and classmates – at Page High and Northwest Guilford Middle during this difficult time,” police said.
Page High School has not publicly released additional details about the injury.
