Olympic legend Mary Lou Retton is facing a DUI charge after being arrested in her West Virginia hometown earlier this month.
According to police in Fairmont, the 57-year-old former gymnast was pulled over on May 17 after a call came in about someone driving a Porsche erratically. Officers said Retton smelled like alcohol, was slurring her speech, and failed a field sobriety test. They also reported finding an open container of wine in the passenger seat.
Retton reportedly refused both a roadside breathalyzer and a blood test. She was later released after posting a $1,500 personal recognizance bond.
Her attorney, Edmund J. Rollo of Morgantown, has not responded to media requests for comment.
Retton became a household name at just 16 when she made history by becoming the first American woman to win Olympic gold in the all-around gymnastics competition at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. She also earned two silver and two bronze medals, helping bring the sport into the spotlight across the U.S.
Just last year, Retton battled a life-threatening case of rare pneumonia. Her family revealed she was hospitalized in the ICU, where doctors considered placing her on a ventilator as her oxygen levels plummeted. She eventually recovered after weeks of treatment and was able to return home.
