Michael Irvin is opening up about his wife Sandy Harrell’s heartbreaking battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s — and the NFL legend is standing by her side every step of the way.
In a candid conversation on the Sept. 3 episode of Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, the 59-year-old former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver shared what life has been like as Sandy’s full-time caregiver.
“We recognized some things were going wrong with her about 10 years ago,” Irvin recalled, explaining that the couple — who met in college and have been married since 1990 — initially thought Sandy’s symptoms were tied to menopause. They share four children together: Myesha, 35, Chelsea, 29, Michael Jr., 28, and Elijah, 27.
The family’s journey to answers was long and emotional. Despite having already cared for both Irvin’s mother and his mother-in-law, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, they never expected Sandy would face the same diagnosis. After nearly a year of tests, doctors confirmed their fears.
“It’s been eight, nine years of dealing with this,” Irvin told Sharpe. “What’s difficult is, it’s quite hard to take care of someone 24 hours a day.”
Sandy’s changing moods make in-home care challenging. “I have to keep a 24-hour nurse with her all the time,” Irvin revealed. “She’ll get agitated and take it out on the nurses. They switch them out, and every time they do, they add more charges.”
Still, Irvin says there’s no question where his wife belongs: at home, surrounded by the family she loves. “If anybody has earned the right to be in her home, it’s her,” he said firmly. “No matter what, she will be in her home.”
Irvin first revealed Sandy’s diagnosis in June 2024 and has remained steadfast in his vow to keep her out of an assisted living facility. “That I shall honor. No matter what it takes,” he said.
Early-onset Alzheimer’s is rare, typically affecting people under the age of 65. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, diagnosis usually involves a series of evaluations, including neurological exams, cognitive testing, and brain imaging.
For Irvin, the road hasn’t been easy, but his devotion is unwavering. “This is my wife. My partner. And I’m going to be right here,” he said.
