Princess Diana’s private hopes for Prince William and Prince Harry have been revealed in a never-before-seen letter — and the timing could not be more heartbreaking.
Years before the brothers’ bitter royal feud became front-page news around the world, Diana reportedly wished her sons would learn how to communicate on a “deeper” level.
The emotional detail appears in a two-page handwritten letter the late Princess of Wales sent in November 1995 to a fan named Michael Barratt. He had written to Diana after watching her explosive BBC Panorama interview, where she famously opened up about the collapse of her marriage to then-Prince Charles.
Now, nearly three decades later, that private letter is heading to auction.
According to Reeman Dansie Auctions, Diana wrote that she had been deeply touched by Barratt’s supportive words. The auction house said the princess especially connected with his thoughts on self-knowledge and moving forward in life.
But one line from the letter now feels especially painful.
Diana reportedly wrote about looking ahead to the future and “sharing with and teaching William and Harry the importance of communication on a deeper level.”
The words are striking today, as William and Harry are believed to be completely estranged.
The late royal mother ended the letter by thanking Barratt, signing off, “With my best wishes, Yours sincerely, Diana.”
The letter, which includes its original envelope with Diana’s handwritten name and address, is expected to sell for between $4,000 and $6,000.
The note was written shortly after Diana’s bombshell Panorama interview, one of the most infamous royal TV moments in history. During that interview, Diana confirmed the deep trouble in her marriage and addressed Charles’ relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles.
“There were three of us in this marriage,” Diana famously said at the time.
According to the auction house, Diana also expressed hope that her decision to speak publicly would help other women facing similar struggles.
Less than two years later, Diana was dead.
The beloved princess died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997. She was only 36 years old. William was 15, and Harry was just 12.
For royal watchers, the newly revealed letter is especially haunting because Diana’s dream for her boys appears to be the exact opposite of what happened.
Today, William, 43, and Harry, 41, are no longer on speaking terms.
Their relationship has reportedly been strained for years, but the tension exploded after Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped away from royal duties in 2020 and moved to North America.
The situation worsened after Harry and Meghan sat for major interviews, released a Netflix series about their royal struggles, and made claims about life inside the palace.
Then came Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare, which sent shockwaves through the monarchy.
In the book, Harry accused William of physically attacking him during an argument over Meghan. The claim deepened the divide between the brothers and left many wondering whether the two would ever reconcile.
Royal author Christopher Andersen recently told Page Six that tension between William and Harry existed even when they were children.
Andersen claimed Harry was made to feel “lesser than” his older brother because William was the heir to the throne. He said that dynamic left a lasting mark and helped damage their bond over time.
While Harry has reportedly made some progress with King Charles, including a nearly hour-long meeting last September, his relationship with William remains frozen.
That makes Diana’s private letter feel even more tragic.
The princess who once hoped her sons would grow into men who could speak openly and deeply with one another never lived to see the painful distance that would come between them.
And now, with her handwritten words going up for sale, royal fans are being reminded of one heartbreaking truth.
Diana saw communication as the key to healing.
But for William and Harry, that door still appears firmly shut.
