American tennis star Hailey Baptiste was forced to leave the French Open in a wheelchair Wednesday after suffering a painful leg injury during her second-round match.
The frightening moment happened while Baptiste was facing Wang Xiyu at Roland Garros.
Baptiste, 24, was in the middle of a rally when she jumped to hit a forehand return and landed awkwardly on her left leg.
Within seconds, she collapsed onto the clay and grabbed her left knee as she writhed in pain.
Her father quickly rushed onto the court as medical staff came over to help.
Replays showed Baptiste’s leg buckle awkwardly after the forehand, making the scene even harder to watch.

After receiving treatment on the court, Baptiste was placed in a wheelchair and taken away. She was forced to retire from the match.
Wang had been leading 5-4 in the first set when the injury happened.
The heartbreaking exit comes after a strong run for Baptiste, who has been building momentum as one of America’s rising names in women’s tennis.
Last month, she scored one of the biggest wins of her career by defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.
Earlier this year, Baptiste also reached the quarterfinals of the Miami Open.
The Washington, D.C. native had already made a mark at Roland Garros before, reaching the fourth round last year for her best career Grand Slam result.
Now, instead of continuing her French Open run, Baptiste is facing uncertainty after a scary injury that stunned fans and brought the match to an abrupt end.
With Baptiste forced to retire, Wang Xiyu advanced to the third round, where she is set to face Yuliia Starodubtseva.
