A former Penn State football player is fighting for his life after police say a driver intentionally plowed into him, his fiancée and another woman during a morning walk in Colorado.
Kyle Vasey, 30, was walking with his fiancée, Corinne More, 35, in their neighborhood around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 8, when authorities say 28-year-old Adam Bauserman drove into them and a third person.
More was killed in the crash. The third victim, 72-year-old Dianne Windes, also died from her injuries, according to CBS News.
Vasey survived, but suffered devastating injuries.
According to a GoFundMe created by his parents, Bruce and Shelley Vasey, the former Penn State long snapper suffered multiple fractures throughout his body, including three spine fractures and four broken ribs.
“Kyle endured multiple fractures all over his body. His left arm was the only limb not injured,” his parents wrote. “So far he has had six surgeries. At this point, he’s still on a ventilator and is sedated to help manage the pain while his body recovers.”
A doctor said in an affidavit that Vasey is at substantial risk for permanent disfigurement or death, CBS News reported.
The horrifying incident allegedly unfolded after Bauserman, who was reportedly driving with a suspended license from a DUI, struck the victims with his vehicle.
Witnesses told CBS News that after the crash, the driver made a U-turn and slowly drove back by the scene to look at the damage before leaving.
Those witnesses reportedly followed him more than five miles to Daniels Park, where police later took him into custody.
Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly described the aftermath as devastating.
“This was a horrific scene,” Weekly said, according to CBS News.
Deputies said Bauserman was “unusually quiet” after the crash. While speaking with authorities, he allegedly asked police if he had “killed the man.”
Police said they do not believe Bauserman personally knew the victims.
Vasey’s family said they are grateful he did not suffer major head trauma and that there is optimism about his physical recovery, but they know the road ahead will be long.
“Thankfully, there was no major head trauma, and everyone is optimistic about his physical recovery,” his parents wrote. “However, it is expected to be a long road of recovery.”
They also shared the heartbreak of losing More, who had been preparing to build a future with Vasey.
“His beautiful fiancée did not survive,” the family wrote. “At this time, we are asking for your thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery of his body, heart, and mind.”
The family said donations would help with Vasey’s rising medical bills. As of Tuesday, June 9, the fundraiser had raised more than $31,000 toward its $40,000 goal.
Bauserman has been charged with seven felonies and one misdemeanor, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
His charges include vehicular homicide, failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving death, two counts of vehicular assault, second-degree assault involving an at-risk person, and driving with a restrained license.
His bond was set at $100,000.
