Oliver Tree, the singer-songwriter and producer known for his viral alt-pop hits and eccentric stage persona, has died at 32 after a horrific helicopter crash in Brazil, according to reports.
Tree was one of six people killed when two helicopters reportedly collided midair in Rio de Janeiro before crashing into a car dealership.
Civil Police in Rio de Janeiro confirmed Tree was among the victims, CNN reported. The crash happened in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood, located in the southwest part of the seaside city.
Authorities said five of the victims were in one helicopter, while the only person killed in the second aircraft was its pilot.
Preliminary reports from the fire department said the two helicopters collided in the air before plummeting down and crashing on top of a dealership that sold electric vehicles.
The impact triggered a massive scene of destruction on the ground. Around 20 vehicles were reportedly hit and caught fire after the crash, according to CNN.
Police said an investigation is underway, and a forensic examination of the crash site has been requested.
Tree had been in Brazil for his The World’s First World Tour. The tour kicked off May 30 in Mexico City, and he had just performed in São Paulo on June 6.
He was next scheduled to begin the European leg of the tour with a show in Lisbon, Portugal, on July 1.
Tree first gained major attention on the indie music scene after appearing on Whethan’s viral alternative pop track “When I’m Down.”
In 2017, he signed with Atlantic Records after the success of the song and later released his debut album, Ugly Is Beautiful, in 2020.
He went on to build an international following with songs including “Life Goes On” and “Miss You.”
His fourth and final studio album, Love You Madly Hate You Badly, was released on April 24 through his independent label, Alien Boy Records.
The investigation into the deadly helicopter collision remains ongoing.
