A beloved former radio personality known to fans as “Uncle Jimmy” has died after being shot outside his Kansas City home, and three teenagers have now been charged in his murder.
James Dodds, who became widely known for his appearances on Fox Sports’ Speak For Yourself, was found shot around 7:15 p.m. Sunday, according to police. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but died Monday.
Dodds, known professionally as Uncle Jimmy, built a loyal following through his work in radio and sports media. He frequently collaborated with sports commentator Jason Whitlock and became a regular presence on Speak For Yourself.
Three 18-year-olds, identified as Aaron Johnson, Mark Elliott Nash and Marquel McGee, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting, according to the Kansas City Star.
Authorities have not released further details about a possible motive.
Whitlock paid tribute to Dodds during a special episode of his show streamed on YouTube Tuesday, remembering him as a major part of his life and career.
“I want to do the best that I can to celebrate Jimmy,” Whitlock said. “For maybe 25 years, Uncle Jimmy was a huge part of my life.”
Former NFL player and sports broadcaster Marcellus Wiley also remembered Dodds in an emotional post on X.
“Thank you for the laughs, the wisdom, and the memories,” Wiley wrote. “You were truly one of one. Rest easy, Uncle Jimmy. Your spirit, your humor, and your impact will never be forgotten.”
Dodds’ death has stunned fans and colleagues who knew him as a funny, warm and unforgettable personality in the sports media world.
The case remains under investigation.
