A passenger aboard a luxury cruise ship has died during a 12-night voyage through Europe, according to local reports.
The passenger was traveling aboard Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Voyager when they died while the ship was heading toward Ireland, Ireland Live reported.
The individual was later brought ashore when the vessel docked at the Port of Greencastle in County Donegal on Aug. 28.
A spokesperson for Foyle Port, which operates the dock, confirmed the passenger died aboard the ship.
The spokesperson said the individual would be transferred to Letterkenny University Hospital, adding that the process had been arranged by the ship’s agent and handled by Gardaí in accordance with Irish regulations.
Ireland’s national police force, Garda Síochána, later confirmed to PEOPLE that the death was not being treated as a criminal matter.
Authorities said the incident was considered a medical emergency and did not provide further details.
Local tourism agency Go Visit Inishowen also addressed the tragedy.
“Sadly, we understand that a passenger has passed away. Our thoughts are with their family and loved ones at this difficult time,” the organization said in a statement.
PEOPLE said it reached out to Regent Seven Seas and Foyle Port for additional comment.
According to CruiseMapper, the Seven Seas Voyager departed Reykjavik, Iceland, on Aug. 20 for a 12-night, one-way sailing to Southampton, England.
The itinerary included stops in Iceland, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland before the ship arrived in Southampton on Sept. 1.
The vessel then departed Southampton for another voyage later that same day.
The Seven Seas Voyager had only recently returned to service following an extensive multi-million-dollar renovation.
The ship spent 25 days in dry dock in Marseille, France, before returning to service on May 21.
The identity of the passenger has not been publicly released, and no additional details about the medical emergency have been disclosed.
