NASCAR’s Bristol Night Race turned into a full-blown fight Saturday after a late-race crash between Carson Hocevar and Ryan Blaney spilled from the track onto pit road.
The trouble began with just over 40 laps remaining at Bristol Motor Speedway, where Blaney and Hocevar were battling for second place.
Blaney had just moved ahead of Hocevar on Lap 457 when he dropped lower on the track to protect his position. Hocevar stayed on the gas, contact followed, and Blaney’s No. 12 Ford slammed into the outside wall in Turn 1.
The wreck ended what had been a dominant night for Blaney.
The Team Penske driver had led a race-high 202 laps, but the crash left him with a 33rd-place finish and dealt a major blow to his championship run. Hocevar survived the chaos and went on to finish third.
But the drama was far from over.
After the checkered flag, Blaney marched toward Hocevar’s No. 77 Chevrolet on pit road and put a hand on the younger driver.
Hocevar immediately started swinging.

NASCAR’s account of the fight says Hocevar landed two punches, with the second sending Blaney backward to the ground. Blaney quickly got back to his feet and landed a left hand of his own before officials and team members rushed in to pull the drivers apart. Neither driver appeared to be injured.

Hocevar later said there wasn’t much discussion before things got physical.
“There wasn’t a whole lot of talking,” Hocevar said. “He just kind of said one thing and then went after me, and I wasn’t going to take it.”
The 23-year-old also acknowledged why Blaney was furious.
Hocevar said he understood the crash could have serious consequences for Blaney’s championship hopes and admitted he would probably be angry too if he were in the same position. He also revealed that the Bristol confrontation marked the first time he had ever thrown a punch at someone.
Blaney saw the on-track incident much differently.
“I just felt like he didn’t lift,” Blaney said, arguing that he had left Hocevar room earlier in their battle before moving down to defend the bottom line.
Immediately after the crash, an angry Blaney told reporters Hocevar “just kept coming left and never lifted and crashed me.”
He also offered an ominous prediction before the post-race confrontation.
“Something is going to happen,” Blaney said.
The crash had serious championship implications.
Blaney dropped three spots to sixth in NASCAR’s Chase standings and left Bristol 52 points behind the lead. Hocevar, meanwhile, added another heated chapter to a season in which his aggressive driving has already created friction with other competitors.
Lost somewhat in all the fighting was the actual race winner.
Joey Logano surged into the lead with seven laps remaining and captured his third victory of the season and 40th Cup Series win of his career. The victory also tied Logano with NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin for 20th on the all-time wins list.
Still, by the time the night ended, much of the attention at Bristol wasn’t on Victory Lane.
It was on two angry drivers throwing punches on pit road after one of the wildest finishes of the NASCAR season.
