Susan Sarandon was arrested in New York City on Thursday after joining a large protest outside the United Nations ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the General Assembly.
The 79-year-old Oscar winner was photographed in handcuffs as NYPD officers removed demonstrators who were blocking streets near U.N. headquarters.
Sarandon was among more than 100 people arrested during the protest, according to organizers Jewish Voice for Peace. Other well-known participants who were taken into custody included Hacks star Hannah Einbinder, comedian Caleb Hearon, activist Chelsea Manning and author Glennon Doyle.
The demonstration drew hundreds of people to the area around First Avenue and East 39th Street.
Many protesters wore matching white shirts reading “Fund People Not Bombs” while calling for an end to U.S. military support for Israel and protesting Netanyahu’s appearance in New York.
Police said officers responded to what they described as an unscheduled demonstration blocking an intersection.
According to the NYPD, protesters were warned to move but some remained in the roadway and were arrested.
Sarandon has long been one of Hollywood’s most politically outspoken stars.
She has repeatedly criticized Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and has participated in anti-war demonstrations for decades.
Her arrest Thursday was far from her first.
Sarandon was detained during a 1982 protest over the demolition of Broadway’s historic Morosco Theatre.
She was also arrested in 1999 during protests following the police killing of Amadou Diallo, in 2018 during a demonstration against Trump administration immigration policies and again in 2023 while campaigning for higher wages for tipped workers.
The latest arrest comes just weeks after Sarandon claimed her political activism has continued to cost her work in Hollywood.
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month, she said agencies were still warning people not to hire her because of her public statements.
“I’ve still had movies taken away recently because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still,” she said.
Sarandon added that she feels more accepted by audiences internationally than by some parts of the Hollywood establishment.
Thursday’s protest was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace and included actors, musicians, activists and elected officials.
The organization said 104 people were arrested and claimed the demonstration was intended to pressure U.S. leaders to stop sending weapons to Israel.
Einbinder, another prominent Hollywood participant, said while being arrested that she believed speaking out was a moral responsibility.
Inside the United Nations, Netanyahu used his speech to defend Israel’s military actions and sharply criticize international opponents.
Dozens of delegates walked out of the General Assembly chamber as he began speaking.
Sarandon’s representatives did not immediately issue a public statement about her arrest.
