Prince Harry is reportedly looking at a deeply personal new project centered on his late mother, Princess Diana, as one of the biggest anniversaries of her death approaches.
The Duke of Sussex is considering several ways to honor Diana in 2027, which will mark 30 years since the Princess of Wales died following a car crash in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997.
One possibility is a new documentary examining Diana’s life and legacy, according to PEOPLE.
But despite growing speculation surrounding the project, nothing has been formally announced.
Sources told the outlet that Harry has been speaking with relatives and people who knew Diana as he considers how to mark the anniversary. PEOPLE reported that a documentary is among the ideas being discussed, but stressed that no film has been finalized or confirmed.
Other British reporting has also said Harry is holding discussions about a possible Diana documentary. However, details including a production company, broadcaster, streaming service and release date remain unconfirmed.
That distinction matters as rumors have already begun circulating that the project could involve Netflix or Harry and Meghan Markle’s production operation. For now, those details should be treated as speculation rather than established fact.
Harry, who turned 42 on Sept. 15, was only 12 when his mother died at age 36. His older brother Prince William was 15.
It would not be the first time the brothers have publicly revisited Diana’s life together.
In 2017, ahead of the 20th anniversary of her death, William and Harry participated in “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy.”
The ITV documentary featured the brothers looking through family photographs and discussing Diana as both a global public figure and their mother.
Harry said at the time that Diana “smothered us with love,” while William described the project as a tribute from her sons. ITV reported that the film also examined Diana’s work involving homelessness, HIV and AIDS awareness, landmines and child bereavement.

A new project would arrive under very different family circumstances.
William and Harry appeared together in the 2017 film, but their relationship has since become severely strained following Harry and Meghan’s departure from their roles as senior working royals, Harry’s interviews about the royal family and the publication of his memoir “Spare.”
Whether William would have any involvement in a potential new Diana project has not been announced.
The approaching anniversary is already renewing public attention on Diana.
Her younger brother, Charles Spencer, has written a new memoir, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” revisiting their childhood, her marriage, her death and the extraordinary events surrounding her funeral.
Some of Spencer’s claims about the royal family have been disputed by Buckingham Palace, making the book one of the most closely watched royal releases ahead of the anniversary.
Spencer has also described Diana’s memory as an enduring presence in his own life, including wearing cuff links she gave him decades ago during emotionally difficult moments.
Harry has similarly spoken repeatedly about the lasting impact of losing his mother.
His 2023 memoir “Spare” opens against the backdrop of grief and the fractured relationship between Harry, William and their father. The publisher describes Diana’s funeral — including the internationally televised image of the two young princes walking behind her coffin — as one of the defining events of Harry’s life.
Harry has also said publicly that he views much of his charitable work through the lens of Diana’s example.
That could help explain why any anniversary project would likely focus not only on the circumstances surrounding her death, but also on the humanitarian causes that made her one of the world’s most recognizable public figures.
Diana famously used her platform to challenge stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS and drew international attention to the dangers of landmines.
Those causes have remained part of how both of her sons publicly discuss her legacy.
The 30th anniversary on Aug. 31, 2027, is therefore expected to generate significant renewed interest in Diana’s life, charitable work and relationship with the royal family.
For Harry, it could also provide an opportunity to tell his mother’s story again — this time from the perspective of a 42-year-old father who has now lived nearly three decades without her.
Exactly what form that tribute takes remains undecided.
For now, the clearest confirmed development is that Harry is speaking with people connected to Diana and examining several possible projects. A documentary is one of them, but there is not yet a confirmed film, distributor or release date.
