Marshall Brian II, the visionary founder of the globally renowned HowStuffWorks website and a prominent figure in technology education, was found dead in his office at North Carolina State University (NC State). His body was discovered just hours after he sent a damning email accusing university officials of orchestrating his downfall.
Brian, 63, had been a fixture at NC State, where he balanced academic duties with entrepreneurial ventures. His wife, Leigh Ann, raised the alarm when she was unable to reach him, prompting a welfare check by campus police. He was found lifeless in his office on November 20, and authorities have yet to disclose the cause of death.
At approximately 4:30 a.m., just three hours before he was found, Brian sent a lengthy email to colleagues, detailing what he described as a systematic campaign of retaliation against him.
“If you are receiving this email, you are a friend and colleague of mine. Today, I would like to ask for a few minutes of your time so that I can tell you a story,” he wrote, according to The News & Observer.
In the email, Brian refuted claims made by NC State’s Executive Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Stephen Markham, who had announced his retirement in an internal memo on November 6.
“The fact is that I am not ‘retiring.’ Instead, NC State terminated me on October 29,” Brian revealed.
He further alleged that Veena Misra, head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was at the center of the conflict.
“I submitted an ethics complaint about Veena Misra,” he wrote. “What came back was a sickening nuclear bomb of retaliation, the likes of which could not be believed. [Misra] ex-communicated me from my department for reporting my concerns to her.”
Brian’s former student, Brandon Kashani, described the tensions within the department as palpable, noting that Brian’s unwillingness to “play the political game” made him a target.
“Marshall was caught in an imbalanced group of people with more power than him, and they didn’t like him calling them out,” Kashani told the university’s student newspaper. “He was keeping people accountable. He didn’t understand that political aspect of it, and they just wanted to get rid of him.”
Kevin Barry, another alumnus, remembered Brian as a cornerstone of NC State’s entrepreneurial community.
“Marshall was a real entrepreneur, through and through,” Barry said. “He dedicated himself to helping students. To see what’s happened to him is absolutely devastating and disgusting.”
