Jimmy Eat World frontman Jim Adkins was forced to pull out of a performance in Mexico City after a frightening medical emergency sent him into surgery.
Adkins, who has led the rock band since its formation in 1993, revealed on Instagram that he suddenly noticed what he described as “a shadow cloud” moving into his vision.
The 49-year-old singer said he immediately knew something was wrong and sought medical help.
Doctors examined him and discovered that he was suffering from a detached retina, a serious condition that can lead to permanent vision loss if it is not treated quickly.
Adkins said doctors warned him that attempting to perform instead of getting treatment could have caused lasting damage.
He underwent emergency surgery and is now back home recovering.
The health scare also forced Jimmy Eat World to cancel additional shows scheduled for this week in Kentucky and Georgia.
“We are disappointed to be missing you,” Adkins wrote in his message to fans.
He also urged people to pay attention when something does not feel right.
“Take care of yourselves, listen to your body, and we’ll be rocking with you all again soon!”
Adkins did not reveal what may have caused the detached retina.
A retinal detachment happens when the retina pulls away from its normal position at the back of the eye. Symptoms can include sudden flashes of light, new floaters or a curtain-like shadow moving across a person’s field of vision.
Jimmy Eat World rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s and became one of the most influential bands associated with the emo and alternative rock scenes.
