Olivia Hussey, the iconic actress best known for her unforgettable portrayal of Juliet in the 1968 classic Romeo and Juliet, has passed away at the age of 73.
A statement on her official Instagram account shared the heartbreaking news, revealing that Hussey died peacefully at home on Friday, surrounded by loved ones.
“Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her,” the statement read. “As we grieve this immense loss, we also celebrate Olivia’s enduring impact on our lives and the industry.”
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on April 17, 1951, Hussey moved to London as a child, where her journey into stardom began.
At just 15 years old, Hussey became a global sensation as Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. The film captivated audiences worldwide, earning two Oscars and securing Hussey a Golden Globe for Best New Actress.
Despite the acclaim, her role also courted controversy, particularly for a love scene that featured Hussey topless at just 16 years old. Reflecting on the experience in a 2018 interview, Hussey described it as “tastefully done” but acknowledged the cultural divide: “In Europe, it wasn’t as taboo, but in America, it created a lot of buzz.”
Hussey’s career flourished in the decades following her breakthrough. She portrayed Mary, the mother of Jesus, in the 1977 TV series Jesus of Nazareth and appeared in the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile. Her memoir, Girl on the Balcony, candidly detailed her Hollywood journey, including triumphs and challenges.
In recent years, Hussey and her co-star Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures, alleging they were filmed nude without proper consent during Romeo and Juliet. The case was dismissed in 2023 due to legal time limits.
Hussey’s impact extended far beyond the silver screen. Known for her devotion to the arts, spirituality, and animal kindness, she was a beloved figure in Hollywood and beyond.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, musician David Glen Eisley, her three children, and a grandson.
