A former professional soccer player has been arrested after a disturbing video appeared to show him dangling a helpless little dog from a fifth-floor apartment window while the frightened animal cried out.

Héctor Alejandro Rosales Bonilla, 64, was taken into custody in San Salvador, El Salvador, on Tuesday, October 20, after the footage spread across social media and sparked widespread outrage among animal lovers.

The video shows a man holding a small pug by its hind legs outside an apartment window, leaving the dog suspended several stories above the ground.

Even more troubling, the man appears to be holding a cellphone in his other hand, seemingly recording or photographing the terrified animal.

The little dog can be heard crying as it hangs in the air before the man finally pulls it back inside.

Although the widely circulated clip lasts only a few seconds, local residents reportedly told authorities that the animal had been subjected to mistreatment for a longer period.

The incident occurred at the Torre del Sol apartment complex on El Mirador Street in the Salvadoran capital.

As the footage circulated, concerned residents and social media users demanded that authorities intervene before the dog was seriously injured.

Their calls for help quickly reached the National Civil Police and the office of San Salvador Mayor Mario Durán.

Police identified Rosales Bonilla as the man suspected of appearing in the video and dispatched officers to his apartment.

He was arrested that afternoon on suspicion of animal abuse.

But the story took a much happier turn for the animals involved.

When police and municipal animal welfare officials entered the apartment, they discovered two small dogs, both of which were removed from the property and placed under protective care.

The mayor later confirmed that the dog seen in the video had been rescued and was safe.

“We received a report through social media about a little dog that was being a victim of animal abuse,” Durán explained in a statement translated from Spanish.

He said city officials immediately coordinated with police to intervene and ensure the animal received the care it needed.

Photos released by authorities showed Rosales Bonilla being detained while an officer held one of the rescued dogs nearby. Another small dog could be seen standing close to the suspect.

In a separate video released by the mayor’s office, a municipal worker was seen playing affectionately with one of the animals, offering a reassuring glimpse of the dogs following their rescue.

Rosales Bonilla reportedly played professional soccer for C.D. Águila, a club in El Salvador’s top division, during the 1990s. He later pursued a career in dentistry, according to published reports.

His arrest has attracted considerable attention because of his sporting background and the shocking nature of the footage.

El Salvador’s National Civil Police condemned the incident and announced that Rosales Bonilla would be referred to prosecutors for alleged animal abuse.

Authorities emphasized that mistreatment of animals would not be tolerated.

Under El Salvador’s criminal laws, certain animal abuse offenses can carry prison sentences, although any punishment would depend on the specific charges and the outcome of court proceedings.

As of October 26, authorities had not publicly released a detailed veterinary report establishing whether the dog suffered physical injuries.

There was also no confirmed update on whether Rosales Bonilla had formally entered a plea.

For animal lovers, the most encouraging news is that the little dog survived the frightening ordeal and is no longer in the apartment where the alleged abuse occurred.

The case also highlights how quickly concerned neighbors can make a difference when they witness an animal in danger.

A few seconds of video prompted an outpouring of concern, an emergency response and the rescue of two vulnerable dogs.

And while the legal process is still unfolding, those two little pups now have something far more important: a chance to feel safe again.
