Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, died on Sunday, December 29, at his home in Plains, Georgia, at the remarkable age of 100. His son, James E. Carter III, confirmed the news, and The Carter Center announced his passing on X (formerly Twitter).
Carter’s wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, preceded him in death just 13 months earlier at age 96. Known for their enduring partnership, their marriage remains the longest of any first couple in U.S. history. Together, they raised four children: Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy.
Jimmy Carter’s presidency (1977–1981) was marked by significant achievements, including brokering peace between Egypt and Israel and reestablishing diplomatic ties with China. However, domestic challenges like economic turbulence and a controversial boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics defined his single term.
Despite losing reelection to Ronald Reagan in 1980, Carter’s post-presidential legacy far eclipsed his time in office. Through The Carter Center, he championed peace, democracy, and human rights, setting a new standard for ex-presidents. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work promoting global justice and eradicating diseases in underserved communities.
Carter’s lifelong commitment to service was evident through his hands-on work with Habitat for Humanity, building homes well into his 90s. He also taught Sunday school at his local church and remained deeply rooted in his faith, even as he faced health struggles, including cancer and several injuries.
In 2023, Carter entered hospice care, a period his family described as reflective and meaningful. His grandson Jason Carter noted it as “an important part of his faith journey,” showcasing the resilience and grace that defined his life.
Born in Plains, Georgia, Carter grew up in a small farming community, later serving as a Navy submariner before returning home to run his family’s peanut business. His humble beginnings shaped his values, and even as he rose to global prominence, he maintained his unassuming demeanor.
Carter’s deep bond with Rosalynn was a cornerstone of his life. The couple shared adventures across the globe, from monitoring elections in emerging democracies to building homes and fishing together. Their love story remains an enduring example of partnership and shared purpose.
Carter’s life embodied a commitment to improving the world. Whether through diplomacy, humanitarian efforts, or simply lending a helping hand, he left an indelible mark on history. His cousin Betty Pope reflected on his legacy, saying, “He wanted to make sure every day of his life he was able to do what he was charged to do—make peace and improve the world.”

He is now at peace with his wife and his Lord!
Jimmy Carter was a remarkably caring man who was concerned about his fellow men and worked to make the world a better place for all. Thank you President for all your good deeds!
