Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are facing fresh claims that their latest attempts to repair relations with the Royal Family may be driven by more than a desire to heal old wounds.
Royal insiders are alleging that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex increasingly view their connection to the monarchy as essential to rebuilding their public image and reviving their commercial appeal after several difficult years.
Harry, 41, recently returned to the United Kingdom for a visit lasting more than five days, during which he reportedly carried out a mixture of public appearances and private engagements.
Meghan, 44, later joined him with their children, 7-year-old Prince Archie and 5-year-old Princess Lilibet, after security arrangements were finalized.
The Sussex family did not appear at any public events together, but they are understood to have held a private reunion with King Charles, 77, and Queen Camilla, 78, at Highgrove.
That reported meeting has fueled speculation that Harry and Meghan may begin making more frequent trips to Britain after spending the past several years building a new life in Montecito, California.
However, some royal sources are questioning whether the apparent thaw is entirely personal.
“There is a widespread feeling that Harry and Meghan have come to realize their biggest asset has always been their association with the Royal Family,” one source claimed.
The insider argued that although the couple wanted to establish themselves as independent global figures, their royal titles and family connections remain the main reason they continue to attract worldwide attention.
“That’s why some people inside royal circles believe this renewed push for warmer relations is not solely about healing old wounds,” the source said. “It’s also about restoring the value of their personal brand after a difficult few years commercially.”
Another insider pointed to the harsh realities of the entertainment industry, where high-profile opportunities can disappear quickly.
“There is no escaping the financial reality of the situation,” the source claimed. “The entertainment industry is incredibly competitive, and some of the opportunities that once came so easily are no longer there.”
According to the insider, the Sussexes may now believe that maintaining a civil relationship with the monarchy is increasingly important to their long-term future.
“Whether that motivation is personal, commercial, or a combination of both is what people inside the Palace continue to debate,” the source added.
One particularly blunt source claimed the couple “want back in the Royal Family” because they are worried their expensive California lifestyle could eventually become financially unsustainable.
Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals in January 2020, announcing that they planned to become financially independent while continuing to support Queen Elizabeth II.
They initially divided their time between Britain and Canada before settling permanently in Southern California, where they purchased a multimillion-dollar mansion and began raising their two children away from palace life.
The couple soon signed a string of lucrative deals involving television, podcasts, books and other business projects.
They also created the Archewell Foundation, while Meghan later launched her lifestyle brand, As Ever.
Their move gave them greater personal freedom, but it also meant they could no longer rely on the financial and institutional support that came with being senior members of the monarchy.
Relations with the Royal Family deteriorated sharply following several explosive media projects, including the couple’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, their Netflix documentary series Harry & Meghan and Harry’s bestselling memoir, Spare.
Those projects included a series of damaging allegations about royal life and deepened the divide between the Sussexes and several senior members of the family.
Harry has repeatedly said he wants reconciliation, although tensions remain — particularly between him and his brother, Prince William.
The latest reported meeting with King Charles may signal that the door to improved relations is no longer completely closed. Still, royal observers remain divided over whether the Sussexes are pursuing a genuine family reunion, a strategic image reset or some combination of the two.
