Andrew Cunanan became infamous as the man who murdered Gianni Versace outside the designer’s Miami Beach mansion in 1997.
But nearly three decades later, disturbing stories about Cunanan’s obsession with fame, celebrities, and Hollywood still add another chilling layer to the case.
Before Versace was gunned down, Cunanan was said to have been fascinated by stars and desperate to be near the world of glamour. According to people who knew him, one of his strangest fixations centered on Tom Cruise.
Michael O’Brien, a former friend of Cunanan’s, claimed Cunanan did not just admire the Top Gun star. He wanted to be him.
“He’d go to Hollywood and hit the best places and drive around in a rented BMW in the hopes of running into his hero,” O’Brien said in a resurfaced interview.
O’Brien also claimed Cunanan often copied Cruise’s style. He said Cunanan had a large collection of leather jackets, but his favorite was a bomber jacket that looked like the one Cruise wore in Top Gun.
According to O’Brien, Cunanan would even look in the mirror and act out characters Cruise had played on screen.
The fixation allegedly went even further. O’Brien claimed Cunanan believed he might someday have a romantic or sexual relationship with Cruise.
He also said Cunanan used the actor as a standard when judging other men.
“If somebody said to him a guy on the street was cute, Andrew would say, ‘Oh, he’s OK, but he’s no Tom Cruise. No guy is as cute as my Tom,’” O’Brien claimed.
“He really believed that one day he and Tom might actually be together. That’s how crazy he was about the whole thing.”
Cruise was far from the only celebrity name tied to Cunanan’s bizarre orbit.
Cunanan was also rumored to have crossed paths with Friends star Lisa Kudrow at a dinner party just weeks before Versace was killed.
According to one of Kudrow’s friends, the actress allegedly said Cunanan gave her “the creeps” after he cornered her and refused to leave her alone.
“He had this wild look in his eyes, and he kept talking and talking — about HIMSELF!” Kudrow reportedly told the pal. “He told me what a great actor he would be, and he dropped name after name.”
The source claimed Kudrow was so uncomfortable that she started looking for a way out of the conversation.
“I was trying to think of anything to say to get away from him,” she allegedly said. “And when no one came over to rescue me, I decided to say I had to go to the bathroom — just so I had a reason to get up and get out of there.”
Weeks later, Cunanan’s name would be known around the world.
On July 15, 1997, he shot Gianni Versace twice in the back of the head outside the designer’s Miami Beach home.
The shocking killing triggered a massive manhunt and stunned the fashion world. Versace was one of the most famous designers on the planet, known for turning fashion into celebrity theater and building an empire around luxury, sex appeal, and star power.
But the case never ended in a courtroom.
On July 23, 1997, eight days after Versace’s murder, Cunanan was found dead in a boathouse only a few miles from the designer’s property. Authorities said he appeared to have taken his own life.
His exact motive remains unclear.
Investigators have long believed Cunanan was targeting gay men. Before Versace’s killing, he had already been connected to four other murders: Jeffrey Trail, his former partner David Madson, real estate developer Lee Miglin, and cemetery caretaker William Reese.
Cunanan’s crime spree made him one of the most notorious killers of the 1990s.
Yet even now, the details surrounding his final weeks remain unsettling. His reported obsession with Cruise, his alleged encounter with Kudrow, and his desperate hunger for fame all paint a picture of a man drawn to celebrity culture in the most disturbing way possible.
By the time Cunanan reached Versace’s front steps, that obsession had turned deadly.
