Judith Barsi seemed destined for Hollywood success.
By the time she was just 10 years old, the talented child actress had already appeared in dozens of commercials, landed roles in major movies and voiced beloved animated characters.
But behind the scenes, Judith was reportedly living in fear of her own father.
Her career began when she was still very young, appearing in advertisements before landing her first television role at age 6 in the true-crime miniseries Fatal Vision.
More than 70 commercial appearances followed.
Her big break came when she was cast as Thea Brody in Jaws: The Revenge.
Judith later voiced Ducky in the 1988 animated classic The Land Before Time and Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go to Heaven, which was released after her death.
Despite still being in elementary school, Judith was already earning a substantial income from acting.
Her small stature also meant she was often cast as characters younger than her actual age.
But as Judith’s career grew, problems at home reportedly became increasingly frightening.
Her father, Jozsef Barsi, struggled with alcoholism and allegedly became jealous and angry over his daughter’s success.
According to reports, he repeatedly threatened both Judith and her mother, Maria.
Before Judith left to film Jaws: The Revenge, Jozsef allegedly held a knife to his daughter’s throat and threatened to kill her if she did not return home after production ended.
Maria contacted authorities in 1986 and reported threats and abuse, but no charges were filed after officers reportedly found no visible evidence of injuries.
Even after Jozsef allegedly stopped drinking for a period, the threatening behavior reportedly continued.
Judith later told friends that her father threw pots and pans at her and once caused her nose to bleed.
The stress at home reportedly began taking a serious toll on the young actress.
Judith developed troubling compulsive behaviors, including pulling out her eyelashes.
After she broke down in front of her agent, Ruth Hansen, Maria took her to a child psychologist.
The psychologist reportedly found signs of serious physical and emotional abuse and contacted child protective services.
But the investigation was eventually closed after Maria told a caseworker she planned to divorce Jozsef and move away with Judith.
Friends reportedly urged Maria to leave, but she was reluctant to abandon the family home and possessions.
In the months before her death, Judith allegedly told friends that she was terrified to go home.
“My daddy is miserable. My daddy is drunk every day and I know he wants to kill my mother,” she reportedly said.
Then, on July 28, 1988, Judith’s worst fears became reality.
Police discovered three bodies at the family’s Los Angeles home in what authorities determined was a murder-suicide.
Jozsef had fatally shot Maria and then killed Judith while she was sleeping in her bedroom.
He then poured gasoline over their bodies before taking his own life in the garage.
Judith was just 10 years old.
Her Jaws: The Revenge co-star Lance Guest later remembered her as “lovely” and “a wonderful little girl.”
Judith and her mother were buried beside one another at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Her grave includes the words “Yep, Yep, Yep,” the famous phrase associated with Ducky, the character she voiced in The Land Before Time.
Decades later, Judith’s brief but heartbreaking life continues to be remembered by fans who grew up hearing her voice on screen.
