Canadian actress Gloria Carlin, known for her work in The Hanoi Hilton and a decades-long career in theater and film, has died at age 84.
Her family announced that Carlin died peacefully at her home in Sherman Oaks, California, on Aug. 5, surrounded by loved ones.
“A successful actress, loving wife and mother, doting grandmother and a devoted friend to so many, she prioritized joy in both her life and the lives of the people around her,” her family wrote in an obituary.
Carlin began acting at a young age in Montreal, performing with the Children’s Theatre, Mountain Playhouse and Centaur Theatre.
After attending Sir George Williams University, she moved to New York City to study acting before eventually returning to Montreal.
There, she married Oscar-nominated screenwriter Lionel Chetwynd in 1963.
The couple went on to build careers side by side, with Carlin appearing in several of her husband’s projects over the years.
Her credits included the 1971 play Maybe That’s Your Problem and the 1987 film The Hanoi Hilton.
Carlin and Chetwynd were married for more than six decades.
She is survived by their two sons and four grandchildren.
“She lived a complete life,” her family wrote.
