Samuel Monroe Jr., the actor known for roles in Menace II Society and several other ’90s films and TV shows, has died at the age of 52.
Monroe died Wednesday at a Los Angeles hospital after battling meningitis, according to his family.
His mother, Joyce Patton, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook.
“I want to thank all of my Facebook family and friends new and old for praying for Samuel Monroe, Jr., my son. But today God called him home,” she wrote.
She also asked fans to continue praying for Monroe’s loved ones, especially his three children.
Monroe’s wife, Shawna Stewart, also posted an emotional tribute to her husband, remembering him as much more than the actor and rapper fans knew.
“Samuel, you were so much more than the talented actor, Rapper the world knew and loved,” Stewart wrote. “You brought laughter, strength, kindness, and love into the lives of so many people.”
She added that her heart was broken, but said she was grateful for the time they shared together.
Monroe had reportedly been hospitalized since April after becoming seriously ill in Las Vegas. He was diagnosed with meningitis as well as MRSA pneumonia and was previously reported to have been placed on life support.
The actor began his career in 1993 and went on to appear in several memorable projects.
In addition to Menace II Society, Monroe appeared in Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, Tales From the Hood and the television series Southland.
Fans of ’90s movies may remember Monroe for his intense screen presence and roles in some of the era’s most recognizable urban dramas.
Monroe is survived by his wife, three children and a stepdaughter.
His family has asked for prayers as they mourn his death.
