Popular Finnish influencer Olivia Oras has died at just 27 years old after allegedly suffering a medical emergency while preparing to undergo a cosmetic procedure at a private clinic in Helsinki.
Oras died on Sept. 3 after losing consciousness while under anesthesia before the planned procedure began, according to her parents. She was rushed to Helsinki University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Her family has described the tragedy as the result of an aesthetic procedure that “went wrong,” but the exact medical cause of Oras’ death has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Reports indicate she had been preparing to undergo liposuction, although authorities have not publicly confirmed the precise procedure or what type of anesthesia was being used.
The case has now taken a serious turn.
Helsinki police said they are investigating Oras’ death as aggravated manslaughter after receiving a formal request for an investigation from her family. The family filed a police report following her death.
Police have stressed that the investigation remains in its early stages.
No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not publicly identified a suspect, clinic employee or medical professional as responsible for Oras’ death. Investigators also have not determined publicly whether negligence or a medical error actually occurred.
Oras had been in the public eye since she was a teenager.
She began building a following on Instagram at around 14 years old and later became the subject of the documentary “The Perfect Selfie,” which followed her life as a young influencer and explored the pressures surrounding social media fame.
Her life later took a difficult turn.
According to accounts shared about her life, Oras endured a traumatic experience while living in Amsterdam and later struggled with mental health issues and an addiction to sleeping pills after returning to Finland.
She eventually sought treatment and began working toward recovery in 2022.
In more recent years, Oras had expanded her work beyond social media.
She founded Oras Respiratus Ry, a nonprofit supporting research into pulmonary diseases. Reports said the cause was deeply personal because her father had been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.
She also reportedly held executive or leadership roles with technology and wellness startups as she continued building a career outside traditional influencer work.
Following her death, Oras’ mother, artist Johanna Oras, thanked people for their condolences while asking that the family be given privacy as they grieve.
For now, many questions surrounding the 27-year-old’s final moments remain unanswered.
