A frightening scene unfolded inside the UFC Octagon Saturday night when veteran fighter Raoni Barcelos suddenly collapsed during the final round of his main-event fight against Raul Rosas Jr. in Las Vegas.
The bantamweight fight headlined UFC Fight Night at the Meta APEX on Sept. 26, with 39-year-old Barcelos entering the bout on a five-fight winning streak against 21-year-old rising star Rosas Jr.
Barcelos appeared to be in control for much of the fight and was ahead on the judges’ scorecards entering the fifth and final round.
Then everything changed.
During a clinch exchange against the cage, Barcelos suddenly went limp and fell to the canvas in a disturbing moment that immediately brought the fight to an end.
Rosas Jr. was awarded the victory by TKO.
At first, there appeared to be some confusion over what had happened. Rosas Jr. and members of the broadcast team initially reacted as though the young fighter had scored a dramatic late finish.
But the mood inside the arena quickly shifted when it became clear Barcelos was not getting back up.
Medical personnel rushed into the Octagon while Rosas Jr. later approached his opponent and knelt nearby as concern spread through the arena.
Barcelos remained down for several minutes before being taken out on a stretcher and transported to a hospital for emergency evaluation.

The UFC later released a reassuring update.
The organization said Barcelos was taken to a Level 1 trauma center, where doctors performed a CT scan and a comprehensive medical assessment.
According to the UFC, Barcelos was “stable, alert and responsive” and had full movement while remaining under medical supervision.
His coach, Davi Ramos, also spoke out after the frightening incident and urged fans not to panic.
Ramos said Barcelos was doing well and had gone for additional imaging as doctors continued monitoring him.
MMA journalist Ariel Helwani also reported that Barcelos was conscious, able to speak and could move his fingers and toes.
The exact medical reason for Barcelos’ sudden collapse had not been publicly announced in the immediate aftermath of the fight.
The scary ending overshadowed what had otherwise been a competitive main event.
Barcelos entered the night with a 22-5 professional record and was competing in his first UFC main event after eight years with the promotion.
Rosas Jr., meanwhile, was making history as the youngest fighter ever to headline a UFC event and improved his standing in the bantamweight division with the victory.
But after the final bell, attention was firmly on Barcelos and his condition.
For now, the most encouraging news is that the veteran fighter was awake, responsive and receiving continued medical care after one of the most frightening endings to a UFC fight in recent memory.
