Mariusz Komenda, the popular Polish chef who won over viewers on “MasterChef Poland” before pursuing his dream of opening a restaurant with his son, has died at age 44 following a battle with an aggressive brain tumor.
The television personality and restaurateur died Wednesday, October 7, just nine months after doctors discovered a malignant brain tumor that required multiple surgeries and intensive treatment.
His death was first reported by Roland Gazeta, a local newspaper in his hometown of Środa Śląska, before being confirmed by TVN, the Polish television network behind “MasterChef.”
In an emotional tribute, the show’s production team remembered Komenda as a talented chef whose enthusiasm and love of food made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
“Mariusz was part of the ‘MasterChef’ family,” the show’s representatives said in a statement translated from Polish. They remembered him for his passion, energy and dedication to cooking, expressing their condolences to his family, friends and fans.
Komenda became a familiar face to Polish television audiences in 2019 when he competed on the eighth season of “MasterChef Poland,” the country’s version of the popular cooking competition that also airs in the United States.
His culinary skills carried him to the semifinals, where he finished among the season’s top contestants. Although he did not win, the experience opened new doors and helped him establish a successful career in the restaurant industry.
He remained involved with the cooking community after the show, participating in culinary events, competitions and charity initiatives while building a reputation as a respected chef in his hometown.
One of his proudest accomplishments came in April 2025, when he opened a restaurant called Father & Son alongside his son in Środa Śląska, a town in southwestern Poland.
The restaurant represented a dream Komenda had spoken about years earlier. Before appearing on “MasterChef,” he had told local journalists that he hoped to run his own restaurant someday, ideally with his son working beside him.
Seeing that ambition become reality made his sudden illness especially heartbreaking.
In January 2026, Komenda was hospitalized after experiencing symptoms that initially raised concerns about a possible stroke. Instead, medical examinations revealed a tumor in the right thalamus, a part of the brain involved in processing sensory information and other important functions.
Doctors diagnosed a malignant glioma, an aggressive type of brain tumor, and his life quickly became dominated by hospital visits, surgery and rehabilitation.
Komenda later shared the devastating news with supporters, explaining that he had initially believed he was experiencing a temporary medical problem.
“I thought it was just a temporary crisis,” he wrote in a statement translated from Polish. “Unfortunately, the reality turned out to be far grimmer.”
He described the diagnosis as the beginning of the most difficult fight of his life.
By late January, he had been transferred to a hospital in Warsaw, where he underwent two major operations. The first involved removing the tumor, while the second required surgeons to remove part of his skull to relieve pressure on his brain.
Although Komenda survived the procedures, his recovery proved extremely difficult. He needed extensive neurological rehabilitation to regain physical abilities affected by the illness and treatment.
Further medical examinations revealed additional concerning lesions elsewhere in his body, creating more uncertainty about his condition.
As the medical expenses mounted, Komenda launched an online fundraising campaign to help cover specialized treatment, rehabilitation and other costs that he said were beyond his financial means.
The appeal brought an outpouring of support from friends, fellow chefs and residents of Środa Śląska, where he had become a well-known and beloved member of the community.
Local organizations arranged fundraising events, while supporters donated money and shared messages encouraging him to continue fighting.
Despite his worsening health, Komenda remained hopeful that treatment and rehabilitation would allow him to return to the life he loved.
Sadly, his condition did not improve enough for him to recover.
News of his death prompted an emotional response from people who had followed his journey from aspiring chef to national television personality and restaurant owner.
In its tribute, Roland Gazeta remembered Komenda not only for his television success but also for the kindness and enthusiasm he brought to local events and charitable causes.
For many residents, he was affectionately known as their hometown “MasterChef,” a man who had achieved national recognition without forgetting the community where his culinary journey began.
His passing is particularly poignant because he had finally achieved his longtime ambition of opening a restaurant with his son less than a year before his diagnosis.
While “MasterChef” introduced him to audiences across Poland, the restaurant and the relationships he built through cooking became an equally important part of his legacy.
Komenda’s family has not publicly announced additional details about his final days, and funeral arrangements were not immediately available.
He leaves behind a legacy of culinary passion, determination and a dream that he was able to share with his son.
For those who knew him, his life will be remembered for far more than the devastating illness that ended it at just 44 years old.
