Meghan Markle has broken her silence over disturbing allegations against her estranged father, Thomas Markle, revealing that she first learned of serious accusations involving him eight years ago and deliberately kept him away from her children.

The Duchess of Sussex, 45, issued an emotional statement Friday, October 23, after reports emerged that her 82-year-old father was being investigated in the Philippines over allegations involving child sexual abuse images.

The revelations have brought a startling new dimension to the family’s years-long estrangement, which began around the time Meghan married Prince Harry in 2018.

But the former “Suits” actress says the public has never known the full story behind her decision to distance herself from her father.

“I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed,” Meghan said.

According to the duchess, she became aware of troubling accusations against Thomas shortly after her royal wedding in May 2018.

She explained that a letter containing allegations against her father had been sent to London’s Metropolitan Police and its Royalty and Specialist Protection unit.

The letter was subsequently shared with Meghan, who said authorities assured her that the claims were being investigated.

She did not publicly disclose the specific details of those earlier accusations, but said the information played a significant role in her decision to keep her distance.

“I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them.”

Her statement marks a dramatic development in a family dispute that has generated headlines for nearly a decade.

The latest controversy erupted after Meghan’s older half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., accused their father of possessing child sexual abuse material.

Thomas Jr. told the British newspaper The Sun that he discovered what he believed were hundreds, possibly thousands, of inappropriate images involving children while clearing out belongings at his father’s former home in Cebu, Philippines.

According to his account, the material was stored among personal possessions left behind after Thomas Sr. returned to the United States earlier this year.

Thomas Jr. said he was horrified by what he found and decided to contact law enforcement.

He reportedly notified authorities in the Philippines and the FBI in the United States, prompting an investigation into the allegations.

The claims are serious, but authorities have not publicly established that Thomas Sr. possessed illegal material or committed a crime.

Thomas Markle Sr. has strongly denied the accusations.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the retired Hollywood lighting director described the allegations as false and said he was deeply hurt that his son was accusing him of such conduct.

“I’m shocked, I’m hurt and I’m very upset that my son is making these accusations against me,” he said.

He insisted that he could never commit the acts being alleged and accused his son of spreading lies.

The public dispute between father and son has added another painful chapter to the Markle family’s increasingly complicated relationships.

Thomas Jr. previously maintained a close relationship with his father and reportedly helped care for him during recent health difficulties.

However, he now says the discovery has changed their relationship permanently.

He told The Sun that he would no longer communicate with his father unless required to testify during an investigation.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s statement has raised questions about what British authorities knew in 2018 and whether the earlier allegations were related to those currently being examined in the Philippines.

The duchess said she trusted investigators to look into the information contained in the original letter.

She also expressed concern for any children who may have been harmed, emphasizing that their protection should remain the priority.

For years, Meghan’s strained relationship with her father has been one of the most heavily scrutinized aspects of her life since joining the British royal family.

The two became estranged in the weeks leading up to her wedding to Prince Harry after Thomas was involved in arranging staged photographs for paparazzi.

He ultimately did not attend the royal wedding at Windsor Castle, with health problems also cited at the time.

Their relationship deteriorated further as Thomas continued giving interviews about Meghan and the royal family.

The disagreement frequently played out in public, with Meghan facing criticism for refusing to reconcile with her father.

Thomas also never developed a relationship with Meghan and Harry’s two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.

Until now, much of the public discussion surrounding the estrangement focused on family disagreements, publicity and the pressures created by Meghan’s marriage into the monarchy.

Her latest statement suggests that she had additional concerns about protecting her family that she had not previously discussed publicly.

The timing of the latest allegations is particularly troubling because Thomas has experienced significant medical difficulties in recent years.

He reportedly suffered a stroke and underwent a leg amputation earlier in 2026 before returning to the United States.

Despite those health problems, he has continued to defend himself publicly against the accusations made by his son.

It remains unclear how long the investigation in the Philippines will continue or whether investigators will pursue criminal charges.

No charges against Thomas Markle Sr. have been publicly announced in connection with the reported material.

For Meghan, the controversy represents an unusually personal moment of public disclosure about a relationship that has remained fractured for years.

Rather than focus on the continuing family dispute, she concluded her statement by urging authorities to prioritize the safety of children and ensure that any wrongdoing is properly investigated.

The duchess said her greatest hope was that justice would be served and that protecting vulnerable children would remain the central concern.
