A high school soccer playoff game in Ohio erupted into a shocking scene of violence when a furious player charged across the field and slammed into a referee, leaving the official hospitalized with broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

The disturbing confrontation unfolded Tuesday night, October 27, during a tense postseason matchup between Steubenville and New Philadelphia. What began as a disagreement over a referee’s decision quickly escalated into a physical confrontation that has sparked outrage and prompted serious disciplinary action.

And the entire incident was caught on camera.

Video circulating online shows the referee moving down the field after a heated exchange with a Steubenville player. Moments later, another player suddenly sprints toward the official and drives his shoulder into his midsection, sending him crashing onto the turf.

The impact was so severe that the referee reportedly suffered multiple broken ribs and a collapsed lung, injuries that required hospital treatment.

According to local reporting, tensions had been building during the closing minutes of the district tournament game. With approximately five minutes and 40 seconds remaining, a Steubenville corner kick led to a collision that left one player on the ground and prompted an angry reaction from the crowd.

Another Steubenville player subsequently collided with New Philadelphia’s goalkeeper, resulting in a foul and further frustration on the field.

As the referee moved to address the situation, an exchange with a Steubenville player apparently resulted in a disciplinary card. Some reports described it as a red card, although local coverage suggested the official may have been issuing a yellow card.

Whatever sparked the confrontation, what happened next stunned spectators.

A second Steubenville player reportedly ran toward the referee from approximately 12 yards away, apparently taking aim at the official as he moved across the field.

In the widely circulated footage, the player can be seen forcefully colliding with the referee, knocking him to the ground before attempting to move away from the scene.

Another player appeared to intervene as the confrontation unfolded, but the damage had already been done.

The referee was transported to a hospital, where doctors treated him for broken ribs and a collapsed lung, according to TMZ Sports.

Fortunately, the Ohio High School Athletic Association later confirmed that the injured official was “doing better,” although the full extent of his recovery remains unclear.

As footage of the incident spread across social media, attention quickly shifted to the consequences facing the student responsible.

The OHSAA confirmed that it was investigating the confrontation and had contacted Steubenville officials to determine what disciplinary measures would be imposed.

Tim Stried, the association’s director of communications, made it clear that the governing body considered the incident an extremely serious violation.

“Physical violence against an official is among the most serious offenses that a coach, player or fan can commit,” Stried said, adding that the organization intended to pursue the matter to the fullest extent possible.

The association initially said Steubenville had indicated that the punishment would be significant, although officials were waiting for the school to complete its review before determining whether additional penalties were necessary.

The controversy has since taken another turn, with Steubenville City Schools confirming that disciplinary action has been imposed against the student involved.

In a statement, the district said it worked with the OHSAA to review the incident and ensure appropriate action was taken.

However, school officials declined to reveal the specific punishment, citing federal and state student privacy protections.

The district emphasized that it remains committed to maintaining high standards of sportsmanship, respect and safety at athletic events.

Meanwhile, the shocking video has fueled calls for even tougher consequences, with some observers questioning whether an attack that reportedly resulted in such serious injuries should lead to criminal charges.

As of the latest available reports, however, no criminal charges had been publicly announced.

The confrontation has also reignited concerns about the treatment of sports officials, particularly at the high school level, where referees routinely face intense pressure from players, coaches and spectators.

For officials who volunteer or work part-time to keep youth athletics running, incidents involving physical aggression can make an already challenging job considerably more dangerous.

The timing of the attack was especially troubling because it occurred during a postseason competition, when emotions often run high and every decision can feel consequential.

New Philadelphia ultimately defeated Steubenville 2-1, advancing in the tournament. But the final score was quickly overshadowed by the disturbing confrontation and the referee’s reported injuries.

Instead of celebrating a competitive playoff matchup, the Ohio high school sports community has been left confronting serious questions about player conduct and the consequences of violence toward officials.

For now, attention remains focused on the referee’s recovery and whether the OHSAA will impose additional punishment beyond the disciplinary action already taken by the school.
