Kelly Ripa has revealed that a heated disagreement erupted behind the scenes of Live with Kelly and Mark, with the longtime television host openly confronting producers over a topic she wanted nothing to do with.
The 56-year-old daytime star surprised viewers during Tuesday’s November 3 broadcast when she admitted that she had gotten into a “big fight” backstage shortly before appearing on camera alongside her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos.
And rather than keeping the disagreement private, Ripa decided to air her frustrations directly in front of the studio audience.
The trouble began when producers insisted on discussing Dictionary.com’s 2026 Word of the Year, a trendy internet expression that Ripa believed would leave much of the show’s audience scratching their heads.
“Do you want to hear about the Word of the Year, everybody?” she asked as the segment began.
“We had a big fight backstage. Oh, we had quite a fight.”
The offending word was “maxxing,” a slang term derived from “maximizing” that has become increasingly popular on social media. It generally refers to taking an activity or aspect of life to the extreme, whether improving physical appearance, increasing protein intake or optimizing sleep.
But Ripa wasn’t impressed.
“I wouldn’t have picked this word,” she admitted, prompting a confused reaction from someone in the studio audience.
The response only strengthened her argument.
“Exactly,” Ripa replied before turning her attention to longtime executive producer Michael Gelman, who was standing off camera.
“Great, our audience has not heard of it, Gelman. Just like I said they wouldn’t,” she remarked after asking whether anyone was familiar with “looksmaxxing,” an online trend focused on improving physical appearance.
Consuelos, 55, quickly joined the conversation, offering his own blunt assessment.
“They should probably do less of that. Less of that looksmaxxing. It’s stupid,” he said.
But while her husband appeared willing to move on, Ripa wasn’t finished challenging the producers.
She recalled how Gelman had defended the topic by arguing that numerous expressions now include the word “maxxing.”
When Ripa demanded examples beyond looksmaxxing, another producer, Dave Mullen, apparently suggested “proteinmaxxing,” referring to efforts to maximize protein consumption.
That explanation seemed to win over Consuelos, who admitted that he liked the term and understood why people might use it.
Ripa, however, remained unconvinced.
As the couple continued discussing the various expressions, she began joking that the audience had already lost interest.
“I just watched everybody checked out-maxxing,” she quipped.
She then delivered another playful jab at the production team.
“I just watched an entire audience of people go to sleepmaxxing.”
Despite her repeated complaints, the segment continued before the couple eventually moved on to the next topic.
The exchange offered viewers a glimpse of the sometimes spirited disagreements that can take place behind the scenes of a live television program, where producers and hosts must agree on what will keep audiences entertained.
There was no indication that the argument resulted in any lasting tension, and Ripa’s comments appeared to be delivered with the sarcastic humor that has become a trademark of her television personality.
Still, the outspoken host made it abundantly clear that she believed her instincts about the audience had been right all along.
Ripa has been a fixture of the morning show since February 2001, when she joined Regis Philbin following Kathie Lee Gifford’s departure. After Philbin retired in 2011, she worked alongside several co-hosts before Consuelos officially joined the program in 2023.
The couple, who have been married since 1996, frequently share stories about their personal lives and aren’t shy about disagreeing on camera.
But this time, it wasn’t her husband who found himself on the receiving end of Ripa’s sharp tongue.
It was the producers who insisted on a discussion she apparently believed should have been left off the rundown entirely.
