A professional soccer match in Spain ended in tragedy after a 30-year-old striker suffered a devastating collision with an opposing goalkeeper, collapsed on the field and died hours later, sending shockwaves throughout the sport.

Jesús de Miguel, a forward for Spanish club CD Tenerife, was playing against FC Andorra on Monday, November 2, when the horrifying incident unfolded during stoppage time at Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium.

With the teams tied 2-2, De Miguel was racing toward a long pass near midfield when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono charged out of his penalty area to intercept the ball. Owono leaped toward the striker, striking him in the chest with his knee in a collision that immediately left players and spectators fearing the worst.

De Miguel collapsed onto the grass, prompting frantic calls for medical assistance from teammates and opponents. Emergency personnel rushed onto the field and treated the injured player for several minutes before he was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

The striker suffered cardiac arrest following the impact and was admitted to intensive care at Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. Although Tenerife initially described his condition as stable but serious, his health deteriorated overnight.

On Tuesday morning, November 3, the club confirmed that De Miguel had died at approximately 8 a.m. local time.

In an emotional statement, Tenerife said the organization was devastated by the tragedy and struggling to comprehend the sudden loss of its player. The club extended its condolences to De Miguel’s family, loved ones and supporters, while his family requested privacy as they mourned.

The match was abandoned following the collision, and Owono received a red card for the challenge. The goalkeeper subsequently faced online abuse, reportedly prompting him to deactivate his Instagram account.

Spanish authorities have also opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding De Miguel’s death. Police are examining the incident as a possible case of involuntary manslaughter, although judicial officials emphasized that such inquiries are routine when a death is considered non-natural. The investigation does not establish criminal responsibility.

Born in Madrid in 1996, De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 after playing for Castellón and scored 11 goals during his first season with the club. His sudden death cut short a professional career that had taken him through several teams across Spain.

Tributes quickly poured in from some of soccer’s biggest names and organizations. Former Barcelona star Gerard Piqué, the majority shareholder of FC Andorra, expressed his sorrow, while Barcelona and Real Madrid also offered condolences.

Spain’s soccer federation postponed Tuesday’s scheduled matches in tribute to the fallen player, and UEFA called for moments of silence before European fixtures.
