Chris Gloninger, the chief meteorologist at CBS affiliate KCCI-TV in Des Moines, Iowa, has announced his departure from the station following a series of threatening emails, including a death threat, that he received in response to his coverage of climate change.
Gloninger took to Twitter to explain his decision, citing the death threat and resulting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as family health issues as reasons for leaving. The veteran weather forecaster, with 18 years of experience and two years at KCCI, began receiving the threatening emails last summer.
Last summer, Gloninger shared a screenshot of some of the emails he received, one of which read, “Getting sick and tired of your liberal conspiracy on the weather, climate changes every day, always has, always will.” Another email reportedly asked for his address, stating, “We conservative Iowans would like to give you an Iowan welcome you will never forget.” The Iowa Capital Dispatch reported that the person responsible for the emails was identified by the police as a 63-year-old man from Lenox, Iowa, who was fined $150 for harassment.
The emails had a significant impact on Gloninger, as he revealed during a recent broadcast. In addition to dealing with serious family health issues, the threats took a toll on his well-being. Gloninger expressed the importance of family and shared that stepping away from TV would allow him and his wife to support their families in their time of need. Furthermore, he plans to dedicate himself full-time to climate change advocacy and finding sustainable solutions.
Gloninger had been an outspoken advocate for climate change action and previously hosted a weekly program on the topic while working at NBC affiliate WBTS-TV in Boston. He even received a regional Emmy award for his coverage. His last day at KCCI-TV is scheduled for July 7, and the station has not provided further comments regarding his departure.
Looking ahead, Gloninger expressed his commitment to focusing on sustainable solutions and driving positive change in the face of climate change challenges. He thanked his supporters and called for continued collaboration to shape a more resilient future for future generations.
