Nearly 13 years after a newlywed bride was discovered slain in her wedding dress, authorities in Mexico have arrested the man charged with her murder.
Estrella Carrera, 26, was tragically found dead in her bathtub in Burbank, Illinois, on May 13, 2012, just two days after marrying Arnoldo Jimenez, the FBI’s Chicago Field Office confirmed.
Jimenez, then 30, was charged with first-degree murder shortly after Carrera’s death. The FBI also issued a federal arrest warrant for Jimenez, who was accused of fleeing the country to avoid prosecution.
On January 31, 2025, the FBI announced Jimenez’s capture in Monterrey, Mexico, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Carrera’s body was found in a silver wedding dress, stabbed at least 18 times, according to authorities. She had two young children at the time—her 9-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, who Jimenez shared custody of. Authorities believe the murder occurred in Jimenez’s Maserati before he dragged her body to the apartment’s bathtub.
Family members had grown concerned when Carrera failed to pick up her children, prompting her sister to request a welfare check. Police discovered her body during their response.
Jimenez’s capture came after years of investigation. The FBI had offered a reward, initially $100,000 in 2019 and later increased to $250,000 in 2023, in hopes of gathering leads. The Bureau also thanked Mexican authorities, Burbank police, and the public for their help.
Jimenez is currently in Mexican custody, awaiting extradition to the United States.
