What started as a fun beachside adventure turned into a shocking brush with history when a group of tourists exploring a South Carolina rental property accidentally discovered human remains—believed to be over 200 years old.
According to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, the eerie find happened last Friday on Edisto Island, in the private Jeremy Cay community. The visitors were wandering near the beachfront when they spotted what they thought were ancient fossils. But a closer look revealed something far more chilling: bones that looked suspiciously human.
They quickly called local authorities, and both the sheriff’s deputies and Edisto Beach Police responded, securing the area and launching an investigation. The Colleton County Coroner’s Office joined shortly after to begin the process of recovering the remains.
Officials say the discovery was made near the site of the historic Edingsville Beach, a 19th-century settlement that was largely wiped out by hurricanes. That location suggests the remains may have come from an old, long-forgotten burial ground swallowed by time and shifting sands.
The bones have now been sent to the Medical University of South Carolina for further analysis to determine who this person was—and how they ended up there. So far, the identity and cause of death remain a mystery.
Authorities are continuing to investigate and say more details will be released as forensic work progresses.
