Devin Harjes, the actor who appeared in hit shows like Boardwalk Empire and Manifest, has passed away at age 41 after a battle with cancer, his representative confirmed.

Harjes died Tuesday morning in New York City after being hospitalized at Mount Sinai West. His rep, David Williams, shared that the actor had been diagnosed with cancer last winter.

“He was an artist of great conviction who never gave less than one hundred percent to any role he undertook,” Williams said. “As a person, he was generous, kind, understanding, and devoted to his family and friends. He was also a great horseback rider and had a magic way with all animals.”

Born in Lubbock, Texas, Harjes discovered acting during his college years and got his start in the Dallas–Fort Worth theater scene before relocating to New York to pursue screen work.

He made his television debut portraying boxer Jack Dempsey in HBO’s critically acclaimed Boardwalk Empire. Harjes went on to land roles in major series including Gotham, Orange is the New Black, Daredevil, Elementary, and Blue Bloods.

Harjes is survived by his parents, Randy and Rosanne Harjes, his sister Trish Harjes and her husband Justin Kelley, as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family.Tools
